The recovery partition is definately not necessary for your computer. I deleted my recovery partition a long time ago. You can probably talk to Dell tech support they probably know how to get it back if you really want it.

did you try a normal install of vista? or an in-place upgrade, in which case u would have to chose repair as the option and not a new or complete install... and select accordingly in the next window.. I think u have the option of chosing the first one if u have all the drivers still there in C: which is where Dell usually puts them.. Check it out... And I dont think you would need the D:..

*** following from an escalation engineer with MS Vista Escalation Support Personnel ***

    In-Place upgrade

    ============

    1. Start the computer.

    2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive after Windows
    Vista start up successfully .

    3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

. If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears.
    Click Install now.

. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

    a. Click the Start button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the Search Bar, and
    then click OK.

Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.

    b. Click Install now.

    4. When you reach the Which type of installation to you want? screen, click
    Upgrade to repair Windows Vista.
    *** End of info ***

see if this will let u install / repair vista and let u get inside the system..

Or if u r trying to a complete reformat / install, then check out the dell laptop reformat guide...

Or if you are trying to repair, probably (I am not sure) you might wanna chose during boot up using the options available in the boot up menu.. U have to press F8 (or F12) I think as soon as u see the Dell logo screen...

    See if this helps..

BUT Before all this, give a call to Dell Tech Support as soon as possible and see if they guide you..

    Good luck.
