    how does dell force laptops to automatically wakes from standby when the lid is open? I want to enable this feature on my other laptops/netbooks

    I think it goes with the option 'sleep when lid closes'

    Go into power options and then there's an option on the left saying 'choose what closing the lid does'. Play with the options in there.
