i read in the HP manual that screan may contain very very small spots that may appear on your screen and this due to manufacturing error and companies try to reduce that error as much as possible , if u need the exact line as listed in the manual i can send it to u

The HP laptops most susceptible to dust settling into the LED display are the Infinity screens which are the edge to edge displays. The XPS 16 also use edge to edge displays. So I wonder if there is a common link between those types of displays?

There is very likely not an easy fix for this. If you've only had the thing for two weeks, you should definitely be pestering customer service. You should tell them to replace the screen or you should return the laptop. Dell's return policy and your warranty are for situations like this; don't be afraid to use them.

    thanks for the reply friends....
now this is what happened when i called their stupid customer service... :mad2:
the first guy who i talked after listening to me and making me wait for 10 min told that the dust specks are due to my use and cannot be repaired and that the screen will not be replaced. ... i cancelled the call and called a second time and the call was attended by another fellow who was comparitively better and said that he would replace the screen with a 'refurbished' one :confused2: which i didnt agree.. he said a new lcd screen cannot be provided..
i asked him that i would rather replace my lap :( (within the first 21 days) and then he connected me to another fellow who said that he would send an engineer who would review my lap and send a report and then they would think about the course of action..then i lost my control and told him that iam sending the sxps back for a full refund ;) ... he then contacted his manager and finally agreed to send a new screen (dispatched today). :D :D
this call took almost 1 hour and i was exhausted. :( ...even if the replacement screen is broken i may not call the ******* customer service :D

Has anyone tried to take apart the LCD ? Because, all it would take is to remove the front glass panel, wipe away the dust, and replace it. If they used glue or something to seal the front glass, then that would be a problem.

But, i havent noticed any dust migrating between the front glass and LCD panel yet (after 4 weeks).

I just found ONE speck of dust in the middle of my screen. Immediately started up an online chat with Dell XPS service, and they're sending me a brand new computer overnight shipping (after 3-5 day build time). FANTASTIC customer service.

It's probably not a good idea to take apart the display assembly. If that glass panel is part of the actually LCD assembly, unless you've got your own clean room, you're likely to introduce more dust (albeit maybe dust with smaller particle sizes) into the LCD assembly rather than get anything out.

I think they manufacture these screens in a "Clean" and static free environment.

I have 3. Had none a week ago. The dust is coming inside the glass panel somehow.

Just a side note: if you ever need to solve a problem like this, I find that it is much more effective to use Dell's online chat. They are much more cooperative and knowledgeable than the phone people.

Not to mention with online chat you don't have the annoying "on hold" thing nearly as bad

I just got my outlet 1640 and there are 4 noticable specs of dust under the screen. What's the best way to get this resolved? Should I ask threw chat to get a new system or something?

If you are dealing with the Outlet you won't have much luck. After talking to about 5 different people about the dust trapped between the screen and glass on my SXPS 13, the rep said all they could do was replace the screen with a refurb. Given the poor quality control, who knows what kind of replacement screen you would get. They will not send you a replacement computer.

Considering the computer was ordered in the outlet, wasn't it refurbished in the first place (unless you bought it previiously ordered new). Regardless, Dell takes a huge hit by selling computers in the outlet - look at how much cheaper they are than new ones. You should be perfectly satisfied and all right with a refurb display.

I guess the dust specks are from manufacturing variability - some of the screens may not be sealed up quite right. I remember that happened on an old Nokia phone I had.

I suppose you're right about the good deal part. It's just that they ship these notebooks out brand new with this problem also. I was expecting scratches (even screen scratches) and maybe a dent or two, but not crap inside the screen.

I guess I can try calling and getting a refurb screen replacement. Do they just send a tech out or something? Cause I live pretty far out and I doubt there is a tech that can come 3hrs out from my city.
