dont forget to remove your battery!
May I have a question: why do you want to live it 24/7?

You do not need to remove the battery...

However it is not recommended to leave a laptop on all the time as it will lead to premature failure.

the same goes for all other equipment without adequate cooling.
your laptop can survive for years even if you often leave it on for 24hr a day as long as it is adequately cooled (cooler, undervolt, power saver) and well protected (i.e. surge protectors, ups, avrs).

My 1730 runs for days without issues. However, I've since resurrected my old desktop machine as a Linux machine which does all my p2p and fileserving stuff. Sits on my home network, stuffed full of tv series episodes ready to stream to my laptop or even my old Xbox original ;)

I have left many laptops on 24/7 without any problem, never used a cooler either.

It does shorten your life of your laptop and you will eventually notice slower and slower startups and subtle decreases in performance. It doesnt affect it at first, but after a few months it starts to show.

Get the cooler and you'll be fine. If the lid is closed all day, the hard drive in the XPS gets really hot and you're screen will be taking the brunt of the heat. Over time the heat can cause damage. $50 and you're set - if you're cheap wait for a deal and pick up a cooler for $20-$30.

cooler probably takes about 2-3degrees off.... better way is to ensure ventilation around the laptop..

I would leave the lid OPEN to help prevent damage to the screen and the system.

You won't hurt it, I have an Inspiron 8100 that I left on nearly 24/7 for several years, turning it off only to transport it. It still runs perfectly fine to this day. Only thing I've had to replace is the fans. Mind you this is now a 7 year old computer.

Undervolting is always a good thing, cooler computer and more battery life for free. I have my T9300 running at 2.3ghz with the lowest allowed voltage and no problems. You don't need any extra coolers, just set the machine on a hard surface so the air can flow easily. If your really concerned with it, prop up the back a little so that there is more air space under the fan.
