I wanted to get a few issues out of the way before I get my new ext hdd. I am planning to buy a sata 1 tb 3.5" hdd and connect it to my computer using an enclosure. I asked for prices and I am able to get a 1 TB with 5 year warranty for around rs.5200 (1$=Rs45). The price seems great and I will be able to get a much cheaper hdd if i make it myself using a desktop hdd.

    here are my questions:

    1. Can the firewire port in xps 1530 be used to connect to enclosures thru firewire. Keeping the price increase in mind, is the transfer speed gain worth it?

    2. I live in India. Is it possible to get such an enclosure for < rs 900 (around $20)? which one should i go for?

3.I know this, but just wanted to confirm if I should take a sata+enclosure or idee+enclosure as my external hdd.

    1. Yes.

    2. The chinese (TechNext) ones go for 250 bucks in nehru place.

    3. Whichever you get cheaper. The data transfer rate would be limited by the usb/firewire port, at around 22-30 MBps.

I am curious, though.. Is a 1TB drive really 5200 bucks?

Personally, I recommend getting an express card eSATA adapter, and getting a compatible enclosure/ external drive. FireWire/USB 2.0 speeds don't even compare to eSATA..

I have to agree about the eSATA add-on. I used my external enclosure with my old laptop on usb and then with my desktop on eSATA and the difference is night and day. You can actually use your external for more than just straight storage. With usb you will notice its slowness all around.
