Today a blue line suddenly appeared in my rgbled screen. it spans the entire screen vertically and almost cuts it in half.

nothing happened to the laptop that could have caused this. I did not get any extended warranty for the laptop but only got it in december. will I still be covered?

Is there anthing I can do to try and fix this? restarting/tapping the back of the screen have done nothing...

If you got it back in December YES it is covered. This sounds like it's a GPU problem - either it's going bad or the driver is corrupt. If it's not the GPU it's the display it's self (hope not as they are no longer being replaced by the RGB LED, but with the WLED).

First step in troubleshooting, try routing your output to an external monitor. If the blue line still appears then it's a GPU problem. If not, then it's unfortunately your screen.

i am currently travelling so i dont have my external display yet. I am pretty sure it is the screen though.

I am not sure this is a screen problem though because when I change the settings to display in portrait mode instead of landscape the line appears in exactly the same spot.

I tried pulling the ram and putting it back (I read that somewhere but didnt understand why that would affect it which it didnt)

What do you mean they are only using wled screens? I paid for an rgb led screen why would I want wled?

Dell stopped offering the RGBLED screen as a configuration option for new computers. It's unclear how many they still have in stock, if any, for exchanges, etc.

Your a rarity. Dell has stopped stocking them for the SXPS 16 and does not offer them any longer. Most people in the past 2 months have been stating both here and on the Dell forums that they are getting WLED replacement screens as Dell doesn't have anymore RGB LED ones. It's pretty widely known :)

so are they offering any sort of discount for that downgrade? I mean I paid more for the rgb led which now has a line through it..

Typically what happens is that if you're offered a replacement they'll give you one with a HDD or RAM upgrade to make up for the difference.

Contact XPS Support first regarding your warranty, and see what they are going to do for you in means to repairing/replacing your screen :)

You just don't "know" right now, until you get in touch with support. ;)

If they state they are not going to replace with another RGBLED (which is what you paid for), ask them what they are going to do for you to make up for the difference, etc.

Hey guys, while we're on the topic of screen replacement, I've had some physical issues with the screen that were out-of-the-box (hinge and plexiglass snugness). There were also 2 instances when the screen just went black completely randomly and didn't respond to my mouse, and I had to turn off the whole computer. I'm thinking about calling Dell this week. I currently have a 720p screen, which I got before they offered WLED 1080p screens (I wasn't going to pay $250 last year for a RGBLED 1080p). If they agree to have a tech over to replace my screen under warranty, do you think it's possible I could ask them if they could get me a 1080p WLED screen instead (and maybe even a different color)? I know for 1640s now, WLED 1080p is standard, and they don't sell the 720p anymore in US. Thanks.

    --FOLLOW-UP:
So I called Dell. Turns out they are going to replace like-with-like. So the same resolution screen. Said upgrading to 1080p at this point is >$400 O_O costs more than a darn external monitor haha.
