Hi i'm having issue with my screen(new notebook that was deliver 1 week ago) I think i have the LG screen but screen is really grainy when viewing picture and videos( ie dvd etc..) however there no such issue when playing games that are 3D . Have the new dell performance driver is there something wrong with display setting or is the screen is at fault? I have not change the factory settings. I have a old IBM notebook and the screen look better for videos then the current one i have.

    Thanks for the help.

It is most definitely a hardware issue if you notice grainyness in the beginning before you even tamper with it.

There are a few possible scenarios of why this is happening:

1 - Dell decided that since people kept complaining about Samsung screens being horrible and LG screens being awesome, they decided to switch the names of the two parts so that they can stick in an "LG" screen into newly manufactured laptops when in fact it is a Samsung screen.

2 - Dell having discountinued the WSXGA+'s due to many faulty Samsung screens, decided to ship all the Samsung screens to LG to use as raw materials in which LG decides to make WUXGA screens from the stockpile of Samsung LCDs they received from Dell. As a result of poor materials used by Samsung that were often grainy and dimmer than standard LG, Dell still wants LG to make screens with them. So LG decided to manufacture the WUXGA screens for the M1730 using the bad materials from samsung resulting in not that great screens.

NOTE of FACT: Dell has always used Samsung Screens for the M1730, never the LG, unless of course, they recently changed or something.
3 - Dell decided to change the Samsung displays to be named LG for their displays with LGs approval as LG knows its far ahead of Samsung and doesnt mind the mockery.

I'd suggest contacting Dell XPS Support and make arrangements for a replacement screen (be ready to provide the Express Service Code) if none of their other suggestions help. Make sure that the replacement screen is satisfactory before letting the tech go (assuming you got the onsite service warranty).

Note: Once the tech removes the old screen, you will be able to see the manufacturer label at the back of the LCD panel and verify if it's an LG or Samsung.

If 3D games aren't grainy but 2D movies and pictures are, it sounds more like a video card issue rather than a screen issue. If the screen was the problem, then everything would be grainy, not just 2D images. There might be a difference in how the video card renders 2D images as opposed to 3D images though.

If desktop pictures are OK but other pictures aren't, is a picture that looks grainy in the picture viewer still grainy when used as desktop background?

I have the LG screen on my 4 month old M1730 and I have played both Blue Ray and standard DVD movies and both are perfect with no graininess on any of the movies at all, I just played a bit of the scorpion king on standard DVD and it lookd perfect. You may want to reinstall the video drivers and see what happens, I am using the 175.63 drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com.

I'm having the exact same problem with my new M1730 with very grainy gradients (a la 6-bit LCD), even though I definitely have the LG panel. Can anyone confirm if the LG panel (LPL0032 in device manager) is 6-bit or 8-bit? I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 on dual 8800m.

    now that is interesting

does that mean screen is def faulty? or does it mean that that is the way the LG screen is full stop?

my photographs were so grainy other folk who witnessed it couldn't beleive the quality!

i was so disappointed of my brand spankign new super dooper screen (that was actually worse than any of my very old desktops/laptops) that I have returned the computer

I'm still not sure yet, I'm waiting to hear from other people while I continue experimenting, but from my tests I'm going to say it really seems like a 6-bit panel. I'd just like others to confirm it, especially if someone knows the true specs on the panel (links would be helpful). Does anyone have the exact LG model number of the panel?

Well I hooked up the laptop to my Sammy 61" TV with DVI in. The picture on the screen exhibited none of the banding issues simply by switching from the built-in screen to the external source. I'm not sure what to think at this point, since everyone swears by the LG screen and that's what I have. Maybe they don't know any better? I did read that an HP laptop had a similar issue and a BIOS update fixed it. I'm running the most current A06 BIOS, though. Kinda at a loss.

    Hi Elkay,

I also have some banding on my LG screen. I took a calculated choice and kept it anyway.

I noticed it first by loading IE 7 and noticing, immediately, banding in the Offline homepage. Next, I ran some banding tests online and found some banding throughout the screen.

However, I took a step back and went over the pros and cons of the screen panel, and what I would be using it for.

1.) It is extremely bright and vivid, which is good for games and movies. This is not a screen for professional photo editing, its for gaming and entertainment. This it does quite well.

2.) Overall, it is a positive pleasure viewing text and graphics on the high res screen. Banding occurs very very occassionally.

3.) There are no dead pixels and minimal ghosting issues.

Because of all of these reasons I decided that the banding was within acceptable range for the use and purpose of the screen. Overall I'm very happy with the screen as a gaming panel primarily.

I hope this helps to provide a balanced view on the panel, and confirm that I have the same issue with my LG, on a week and a half old laptop m1730..

I should mention that 8-bits are generally slower response time than 6-bits which could explain why we got the 6bit screen, its better for gaming and for watching moves due to lower ms response time...

Hmm.. all valid points. The response time is amazing, and I do weigh all the pros that nickbarbar has mentioned (had already done most of that in my head myself). I was mostly making sure I didn't have an actual defective panel. My M1710 had a panel with no banding, but the response time wasn't nearly as fast as this one and the viewing angle wasn't nearly as good, either. On a side note, those that are using this panel with an NVidia card, I recommend setting the Gamma in the control panel to 33%. That was what I found was the most accurate curve for most viewing environments and helped fix some (but not all) of the issue with banding in darker/shadowed colors.

shhouldn't have a defective panel but can also compare the different positives. If his images are truly totally blurry then definitely you should switch it. However i have some banding and i know its normal to a degree i've been through this before. There really isn't the PERFECT PANEL OMG.... this one is overall just very good. I'm pretty picky about this stuff too, but this panel doesn't bother me, actually i'm growing to love it..

Just curious, does your monitor show as Generic PnP in device manager? Anyone have it show the actual LG panel? I'm thinking there may be a color profile problem with it being a generic driver inf.
