I ordered the XPS15 last week and was wondering if anyone knows if the USB3 on the L502x is Gen2?

I always thinking of getting the Intensity Shuttle USB3 capture device. When I e-mailed Black Magic Design about it they told me the following:

"Unfortunately, this will probably not work. We just tested with a Dell M6500
here and that was also tested to not work.

The current hang up is that most USB 3.0 laptops are using the GEN1
motherboards that do not allow for full USB 3.0 bandwidth allocation. There
are some newer laptops coming out that should use the GEN2 motherboards
which will support the full USB 3.0 bandwidth allocation which should
    hopefully work."

I was originally planning on ordering the Intensity Pro for my desktop but thought it would be great if I can use it at home and on the road just in case.

I'm not sure of the L502, but the motherboard for the L501 uses a separate USB 3 chip to provide USB 3 ports.
You could try comparing the drivers between the L501 and L502 and if the driver is the same, then the chipset is most likely the same?
The current L501 is Renesas driver for USB 3.0 Host Controller, v. A02, 2.0.34.0.

Maybe by motherboard they meant the new chipset for the 2nd Gen Core Processors (H67)...

    i found this:
Renesas Electronics Introduces New USB 3.0 Host Controller with 85 Percent Reduced Power Consumption | Renesas Electronics
Maybe some XPS owner can watch in device manager about Renesas.
Other way is to look over chip and read code if there is "A" after numeric code like a image in link then is µPD720200A.
In this day Renesas have presented new third generation
Renesas Electronics Introduces New Third Generation USB 3.0 Host Controllers with Industry-Leading Transfer Speed and Low... | Renesas Electronics

I think is possible that XPS use second generation because it is out from July 2010 and XPS come out in October 2010.

At today don't exist intel products that support USB 3.0.

So to clarify is it the same host controller chipset in the new L502 or do we just know that they use the same driver package?

Thanks for the responses, I was going through the FAQ at Blackmagic Design and found this PFD Doc
    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/downloads/software_readme/ReadMe%20before%20you%20install.pdf

    On there it says:
"If your computer has the NEC chip, then this utility will already
be installed on your computer. Go to the Start/Programs menu
on your desktop, then click All Programs, Renesas Electronics and
then USB 3.0 Host Controller Utility.
Once you run this, it will indicate your current driver and firmware
version. You will need to have firmware version 3.0.2.5, and driver
version 2.0.4.0, or higher. If not, you will need to download and
update both the firmware and the driver"

I am pretty sure this is referring to desktops so this may notwork on laptops

I also found in another forum that says the Intensity Shuttle doesn't work with the L501x regardless of the drivers used. So I guess it would be safe to assume that it may not work on the L502x as well. Here is the forum if anyone a curious. Telestream Community Forum - New System suggestion

The Shuttle is EXTREMELY picky with the type of chipset. I believe the only motherboards that work for the Shuttle is the x58 boards which are just for desktops.

It also worked for the HP envy15 that has been discontinued.

After looking around I am almost wondering if the shuttle would be worth the headache to get it even for my p55 desktop, as it is suppose to work with the p55 and a nec usb3 card. I still need to get a USB3 card for it but to find one that may work might be a headache.

TOKYO, Japan, April 1, 2010--Completing a merger transaction between the former NEC Electronics Corporation and Renesas Technology Corp., the newly established Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723) today announced that it has commenced business operations.

    Nec is become Renesas.

    X58 doesn't support USB3.
X58 motherboards with USB 3 support have NEC/Renesas chip,
maybe the same on DELL XPS.
