    Is there any reason to get an XPS M1710 instead of an E1705? I can get a refurbished XPS for about the same price as a similarly configured E1705.

    Does the XPS version offer anything better if all the configuration is the same as an E1705?

    I know there are cosmetic differences, but is there anything else that really makes a difference?

    Should I stay away from refurbished Dells?

    Thanks for your help,

    -Darin

    The XPS M1710 has the option for a higher end GPU - the 7900GTX and 7950GTX. You also get better XPS dedicated support. Both notebooks have the same chassis though. So basically your paying mostly for looks and the support. The XPS M1710 has lots of nice looking LED's and a nice black or red colored lid. I think dell outlet is the way to go. Just be sure to take advantage of the 15% off dell outlet coupon for XPS's...

    I've bot at least 6 things from the Dell Outlet (Inspiron, Latitude, and Axim's) and have never had a problem and have saved a ton of money.

    There are a few minor differences:

    * M1710 has a Gigabit ethernet card that you might or might not have any use for (ethernet backup would be one thing)
    * The M1710 screen is brighter, 250 nits compared to the e1705's 180.
    * XPS support, though it seems the american version is not that good, you get better in Europe
    * hardware *options* differ
    * ... can't think of anything else

    I haven't heard many with problems with refurbished Dells. Or rather, if you have an issue, they will fix it.
