I received a L702x today as a warranty replacement for a 1647 with throttling issues. Although I've generally been satisfied with Dell's warranty, the machines have been unreliable at best, and I want to sell the replacement on eBay so I can buy a desktop. Right now, though, only the service tag for the 1647 is showing up on dell.com...I'm getting invalid service tag errors for the replacement L702x. Obviously, in order to sell the machine, I'll need to be able to get at the configuration info (I'm trying to avoid opening the box Dell sent, so that I can ship it to the buyer untouched) and so that I can transfer the remaining warranty over to the buyer.

So, my question is: is this normal? Is there a lag between when the replacement system is shipped and when that system's service tag is entered into the Dell database? Or do I need to harass someone to get it transferred?

Sometimes it takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for the information to be updated on support.dell.com

Alright, thanks. I don't suppose you know whether the transfer is triggered by them receiving the old machine? I'd like to hang on to the old machine for the next week or so until I get the desktop so that I'm not computerless. But maybe that's too many plates to try to spin and I should just get it back to them.

The 702x is dramatically better than the 1647 in terms of throttling, heat issues, etc. But if you still want to sell, obviously getting that service tag would be good...did you not get emailed an order slip or something with the configuration on it? (Well obviously you didn't it seems...DOH).

My service tag was a day or 2 delayed from after I got it to it being in the system.

Yeah, the consensus is that it's a better than the 1647, and I believe that. But the 1647 was in turn a replacement for an m1330, which was really what I wanted in the first place -- a lightweight, highly portable laptop with decent GPU performance and good battery life. Neither the 1647 or 702x scores more than 33% by those criteria. So, might as well go with a desktop + netbook at this point, I figure.

They emailed me a list of proposed system specs before the exchange order actually went through. No idea if those match up to the actual specs of the machine I was shipped.

You had an M1330 and they gave you a 1647 instead? Were there no more 1340? Though that had its own host of issues too..

Yea the 1330 and others of that gen had major troubles, though those were on Nvidia for a faulty line of GPUs. But that's all done and gone now...As to your desires, I say the 702x hits 2 of them, the others being debatable. The battery life is very good (5-6 hour on the 9-cell) and the GPU performance, at least for the 555m, is way better than people like to imply. I agree a 17" is a lot less portable than a 13" however. The weight is actually less than a lot of 15" on the market, but again, it isn't a 13". I'm not trying to say you are wrong here, just that you might be pleasantly surprised. However, if something smaller is your desire, why didn't you press for a 15"? And of course, just selling it is naturally an option, although one that personally I would find to be extra un-necessary effort.

    Good luck at any rate.

I believe this was the case. I know I spent like two weeks arguing with various Dell folks trying to get a more thin and light replacement for the m1330, and they repeatedly insisted that there wasn't anything like that they could give me. This time, I didn't even get a chance to argue...they said they were sending a system, and it was already on its way before I could say "...but that's an 8 lb system!"

It does come with the 9-cell battery, and that's better battery life than I had read the 702x had elsewhere. But that's just more weight/worse form factor, you know? And while the 702x may be more reliable than previous XPS systems, I've been through 4 full-on system failures with the old m1330 + 2 MB replacements with the 1647, and I'm just getting a little exhausted from dealing with it. And my warranty is up in a little less than a year, so if the 702x does develop problems, I'll soon have a $1000 paperweight. I'm not trying to trash the XPS systems...they've all had their virtues. I just feel like it would be smart to cut my losses and go with a hand-built system that I can maintain and upgrade myself.

edit: and for what it's worth, i appreciate the insight. i have been on the fence about selling it, since, as you said, it is a pretty big hassle. but it just looks like it's the best alternative i can come up with.

I understand. If I went through all you did I might well be doing the same. Yes the 9-cell does make the form factor a bit odd. As for the battery life you saw elsewhere, the 3D-screen system is hardwired to the NVidia GPU, effectively cutting the battery life in half, perhaps that is what you saw referenced?

And I agree that having a system you build and maintain is nice. I love building desktops, only the one for myself plus an HTPC, but I've built several for other people. The day we can do that with laptops the laptop manufacturers are going to have a hard time staying in business!

In case anyone else runs into this...the service tag is now transferred, about 8 hours after I received the system. So yeah, looks like it just takes a little bit of time.

I replacement 2 time inspiron, and later refund.
buy when I receive the new one, servics tag is working. and follw with factory date.

i mean before send out factory, servics already input. one reason the notebook is old, much a time for reset.

i check the order no. if on sell do replacement the order. no is normal. when on techincal do replacement, the order no is different. such xxxx-123456. (xxxx is your old servics tag no).

i receive this kind sepecial order. i receive has a dead pixel. i think that is old. so i refund. so, hope you check with detail.

hey, I was wondering what was the specs of the 1647 and what are the specs on the L702x. (I'm just wondering so I know if I should consider complaining enough to get a replacement)
