Have the money and the want for a new XPS 15 or 17. I'll probably go for a high end version, with the best video card and so on. I can, however, wait a month or two, if need be. The 3 year old M1530 is still holding up.

I haven't been following the pipeline, so I just wanted to ask those who did if there was something new coming up soon that was worth the wait. Kind of like how sandy bridge was adopted last January and how it made its way through the models or how the BRG display became an option. However if the current models are new refreshes and what not, there may not be much reason to wait.

Any tips? Will the 15 get a 3 GB card? Will the 17 get anything noteworthy? It looks like the top Nvidia card on the 17 has been around since January; maybe something new around the holidays? What do you think?

As I'm sure you know anyone who is waiting for the next best thing in tech is going to be waiting forever, there's always something new around the corner. If the current lineup meets your needs I'd say go for it, but you mentioned you can wait a few months. CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is in January and manufacturers show off what's coming and tend to refresh models around that time. So you might see some new silicon in the XPS lineup in Q1 2012.

Yes waiting is endless but sometimes there really is something right around the corner, like the sandy bridge stuff last year. Then a lull with small upgrades here and there. I just don't want to be missing something big coming down but as both the 15 and the 17 have seen a couple of refreshes this year I am guessing there won't be anything big dropping soon. But I wanted to check anyway.

GPU upgrades idk so much about, but I understand what you're saying. CPU refreshes occur usually after january, and then they're more gradual over the course of the year. Ivy bridge is supposed to be released in Q1, but that means anywhere between Jan-Mar, and then thats operating under the assumption dell offers a system with that CPU right away. If you can wait until late winter/early spring and you want the cutting edge, then there's not really a reason not to.

Prices on the XPS series (minus the 14z) have currently dropped and with the holiday season coming up you should be able to get a great system now for a great price, I would just pull the trigger on it :).

Yeah you can wait forever to get the newest stuff. Its very hard keeping up with tech. But the gpu wont be upgraded until the 600 series come out (next year sometime) and even that will be a 445 or 555 equivalent so i wouldnt even expect much more performance.

Don't get me wrong, I love my XPS L502 X, but if I was looking for a new Laptop right now I'd be checking out the ASUS N55SF. It comes with the GT555M, new Intel CPU's, 6GB of RAM and is bundled with a seperate subwoofer on Amazon for £750.
