    Hello all:

My laptop used to go into standby whenever I shut the lid, and would resume when opened. This was great; it's what I want. Unfortunately, ever since a Dell tech was out to replace my DVD drive (it ate my CD), it hasn't been doing so. At least, this is when I think it started happening. This is a dual-boot machine, and neither XP nor Vista will sleep when set to do so when the lid is shut. The screen just stays lit up as if it were still open. Is it possible a sensor could be broken that tells the laptop its lid is shut?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a way I could fix this myself? It'd be unfortunate to have to call Dell again to get them to fix this.

    Thanks in advance! :)

Yes, I thought I had mentioned that (although on reread, I hadn't.) I have checked the power management settings on both the Vista and XP side.

Rhodan: Wow, that was some quick specific advice. I'm really hesitant to open my laptop that far, but I might do it. It's kind of funny the switch is all the way over there.

Before I open the laptop up again (it will be the third time in two months), is there anything else I could try? I'm going to poke around in the BIOS just to make sure nothing there got switched.

Well, I think I"m going to have to decide soon whether to open it myself or not. Does anyone know how the warranty works? More specifically, if I go inside to fix this and accidentally screw who knows what up (which I don't think I would), would I be voiding my warranty?

    Thanks!

I was having a similar problem. When I shut the lid, or try to put the computer to sleep via the Start menu, I would get a restart, or it wouldn't do anything. I read about this issue being related to the NVIDIA drivers. So I removed the originals, and downloaded the recently updated(8-18-08) NVIDIA driver from Dell's website. No problems since. I don't know if this will help, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the advice, Micromachine, but I'm completely able to put the computer to sleep via the Start menu as well as the power button (I have the power button set to sleep the PC.)

So any word on whether I'd be voiding my warranty by opening this thing up and attempting to connect the cable?
