My xps m1530 keeps crashing when I try to play games. It only works when I put the video settings of the game really low, but it should be able to handle the higher setting since they are the ones that are recommended. When it crashes it just completely turns off the laptop. What do you guys think the problem is?

Are you monitoring the temps with software or are you just basing this off of feel? My GPU has reached 100C while gaming (yes I plan on getting it replaced) however I have never crashed to desktop or had the computer restart on me. What games are you playing? Can you post your specs, if you put them in your sig you will never be asked again.

I called up dell and apparently this is a common problem where the gpu overheats causing the laptop to shutdown. Since my laptop is still under warranty it wont cost me anything to fix, but because i bought it from bestbuy i have to bring it to them to fix.

I've just started noticing the same problem with my XPS M1530. I've had it for a little over a year. It ran Portal and Fallout 3 just fine but crashed about 5 minutes into Far Cry 2. It does a fine job with video transcoding.

    My specs are:

    Dell XPS M1530
    C2D T8300 2.4 GHz
    8600M GT
    4 GB RAM
    Vista Home Premium SP1

I haven't checked for any driver updates. I'm using BIOS Revision A08. Just by touch, my computer seems to get hot while playing games, but I've felt it get hotter and not crash before.

That is no longer true about the Best Buy thing. Dell was getting so many complaints about Best Buy giving people hassles about the warranty that they now allow you to use Dell or Best Buy to provide warranty service. The choice is now yours. There is however a requirement of registering the system somehow on the Dell website. The link to the article is under my other OS but you can find it on the Direct2Dell blog. It is fairly recent.
