Do xps dells come with the same amount of bloatware as non-xps(specifically m1330, but I doubt it matters). I didn't choose any productivity software, but does it come with the google toolbar nonsense? Also, I know reformatting is key here, but I thought maybe the more upscale xps was cleaner.

No special privileges for the xps, I haven't bought a dell in a while(2years), does it still come with all the garbage, like adobe and google toolbar. I don't consider quickset and other dell branded things garbage, just google toolbar and other spyware/junk

30 day virus trial? Wait...I got a 18 month subscription to PC-Cillin Internet security for my 1530, and that's about it....

There aren't that many bloatwares installed, took me 15 minutes to uninstall adobe photoshop (full version BTW), PC-Cillin and Camera enhacement softwares...and that's about it...unlike HP or Gateway, DELLs doesn't come with garbage like "WildTangent" or "RealPlayer" or worse..."Norton Trial"...so I'm actually pretty happy. I was going to reformat after I get it, but I changed my mind, and kept using DELL's default after uninstalling the above 3....very happy with DELL.

PS. If you still want a fresh install, DELL is even nice enough to include a Vista clean installation disc, so just pop that in, install, get drivers and you are set to go.

Google junk is fairly standard, that'd be the first thing to get rid of. Other bloat stuff really depends on the system I think. Norton, Mcafee and other anti virus junk trials can come as well. Depending on how bogged the system is when you get it, a fresh install is well worth considering.

I guess there is no real reason to waste time on a reinstall. BTW does the recovery partition of the OS take up alot of space on the hdd

I hadn't noticed Google toolbar on my refurbed POS M1530 or any of that other stuff. Then again, the Vista menu makes it hard to see what all is installed. Maybe the bloatware is lurking out of site. My Inspiron came with so much junk I was glad that I was already committed to replacing the HD with something larger. The stock drive had over a quarter usurped by junk.

When I received my M1730 a week ago the first thing I did was to do a clean install of Vista Ultimate to get rid of all the bloatware even before I started using it, now a days I tend to do this with every new pc I buy. :D :D

I don't understand what is the the point of reinstalling the os, if all dell puts are a few useless programs which take like 10 minutes to uninstall?

My 1530 didn't come with many bloated programs. If you wanna talk about bloatwares.. HP takes the cake. At least Dell gives you all the "individual" discs so you can re-install them separately if you plan to clean install. When I got mine I just deleted and cleaned the registry. Like I said there weren't that many bloats to begin with.

TrendMicro AV is there only if you ordered it in the Software sections - alas it is choosen for you by default you have to select "No Security".
There is no 30-day trial - by default they will sign you up from 15- to 36-month of the nonsense - save yourself $19-$39 by selecting "No Security" unless you want it.

The recovery partition is 10GB, but you can delete all the folders in there and put other documents in.
