    Hi,

I have an XPS M1730 with the following problem: sometimes the fans enter a cycle in which they turn off for 3 seconds and then on at full speed for 3 seconds. This usually goes on for a few minutes.

I know this is a BIOS problem and I read somewhere that, on the dell XPS M1330, an update to A12/14 would help. The M1730 however only has A11 available on the dell website and that's the one I already have.

Can I use the M1330 A12/14 version for my M1730 and if so, where can I find those BIOS ?

    Thanks!

    Ps: I have windows 7 64bit so I can't use I8Kfan

You can't use the M1330 BIOS with the M1730.

Thats a normal behaviour of bios A11 which is the latest one.
Basically it keep the fan going thru on off cycle when the gpu hits 50c in idle, so nothing to worry about, its pretty normal.

It does the same here and it does the same for our fellow beast owners. Its totally, i repeat, normal. Its a feature of the newer A11 bios.

So it's normal, but don't you guys find it irritating as hell ? Everyone around me is complaining about my laptop noise when it enters this cycle.

I dont find it annoying because most of us runs an x9000 overclocked thru bios, which means that fans are always on.
You can downgrade to A10 if you want, check latest three pages of official owner lunge thread, theres a link for it.

I think the reason why it sounds "irritating" is likely due to the fact the fans come on to full then off sporadically again and again. This can be heard in quiet places. Just imagine in a library... Imagine you're seated with many people surround you and your beast suddenly roars itself up, and down again. :p

You can downgrade to A10 if you may.

PS, i8kfan works with Windows 7 X64 systems, but it doesn't support more than 2 fans, so it's still rather not so useful for the M1730.

    - I'll try downgrading to A10. Does A10 just keep the fan running on low, instead of this cycle ?

    - Which version of I8k works on W7 X64 ? I can't get it to run :s

    With A10 you'll be OK. That's why I'm still using A10.

I had to backout from A11 to A10 due the noise of the fans - unbearable and also it killed one of my fan. I don'nt know which one but the noise is very similar to an old fan. I'm using an small external fan and the noise stops. I live in Melbourne (Australia) hope I can find a good repairer. By the way, I'm not a gamer and have not rried any game on my machine from day 1 (34 months old now).
