It's awesome and it is way to expensive just buy a new Eurocom with a Quad core Processor. But i still like this thing a little more. Smoky Grey looks like a Tie Fighter!

... and the only options are a Blu-ray drive and RAM, which will only make it MORE expensive. I REALLY hope that's not the final config page.

EDIT -- okay, that makes me feel a LITTLE better... :p

What exactly is an "E-Code"? The M1730 is still not officially released because Dell has not really put it on their website. When I typed in those codes, I did see the laptop ready to order, but I am still confused. There will only be one specific way to customize the laptop, not 3 (as provided here with the 3 E-Codes). Please exaplain what this all means.

(And I guess we can all assume that the M1730 will be released very soon after all based on this new information!)

A e-code is what Dell puts in it's print ads that allow you to goto their website to purchase what you see in the magazine.

The e-codes were leaked for the 1730 and thus you can see the pre-configured versions of it. Once it's available for purchase, there will be a CTO one.

The $2,999 version looks decent. But, it would be much better for them to add a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray than the Physics Card. Since, the SLI 8700M GT is still not too powerful, and won't be able to play games that will use a physics card other than the ones already on the market.

It also lacks a wireless N...

NO STUPID COLOURS PLEASE... save us from anymore delays...

Over the last days I've read quite a few posts concerning the battle between 7950GTX and the 8700GT in order to figure out whatever I should go for a XPS 1710 with a 7950GTX or wait for the XPS 1730. This was all dependent on whatever the 1730 would simply have the 8700GT (then I would go with the XPS 1710 and the 7950GTX as performance is most important to me and as I will only be stuck with the laptop for 1-2 years before buying a new one) or perhaps the rumoured 8700GTX or a 8800M card ... as it turns out to be dual 8700GT in SLI I'm a bit unsure...

The graphics power from such a setup will likely perform equal to or better than a single 7950GTX, however, dual graphics cards will yield less time on battery power - but how much?

Is it possible to turn of one card - say while using the laptop for other things than gameing and running on battery power?

As I'm ordering through work I'm stuck with Dell ... so what do you think? Still go for the 1710 with the 7950GTX or get the 1730 with a dual 8700 setup?

    Thanks for any help :)

If cost is not a concern, the 1730 is really much more powerful,
I believed it's about double the price of 1710 tough...

Hey, I found something interesting. In that "eyecandy" shot of the M1730, I saw that the one facing the other way on the left had a dark grey/black keyboard. That thing is still ugly though, I could design a better laptop. I think they sould have gone for M1330 styling (of course bigger) and that would have been much better IMHO.

Im pretty sure there will be a dark colored keyboard cuz theres enough evidence to prove that.

I am not sure about the water-like texture on the 1730. They should have kept in the same line as the M1330. I don't however like the base configs and I am surprised to SLI in a Dell laptop.

It is a little odd that the marketing pics show all the colors available, but the only one you can link to is the blue one.

Also disappointing about the limited selection - I was hoping for an 8800 option.

these sli 8700gt's will take as much power as one 7950gtx(45w compared to58) so if your concerned about power then it wont be such a big deal. also why have the ageia thing? i think its a waste and prolly adds $300 to the total price.

narsnail, you seem to know this area quite well (I read your sticky on the 7950GTX vs the 8700GT).

What's your recommendation? Wait a few more weeks and get the new 1730 with the dual 8700GT (waiting a few weeks are ok, waiting a few months for a 8800M is not ok)? However, looking at some benchmarks, especially anand's, the 8700GT must scale quite good in SLI to really match the 7960GTX, right? At least given current games and games to arrive within the next year (I'm going to be stuck with this laptop for 1, 1.5 years).

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Wait and get the 8700M GTX, or the 8800M. Right now, the 7950 GTX is still better.

well two 8700gt's would be better than one 7950GTX, but for more money depending on what your looking at. honestly i think that the 1730 is a good deal at the base price. personally i would wait for very high end card with a 256bit bus such as the rumored(8700gtx/8800m). But if you want it to last you atleast a year the 1730 will for sure, new graphics cards for laptops wont be out until next summer so should possibly last you up to two years.

also something to consider is the new toshiba X205's, the come with GDDR3 8600gt's in SLI only starting at $1999. the higher end one is $2499 and has more hard drive space, a faster processor, and a WSXGA screen and both models come with an HD DVD drive, hell of a deal.

It depends on the situation. In a game fully optimized for SLI, the dual 8600M-GT's have the potential to outperform the 7950GTX, but in reality no one knows until we see some real world performance results of such a setup.

The 1730 is available and configurable on Dell´s EU site (well Netherlands at least).

All of this at a price of 2.699 EUROS (approx. $ 3.779)

The fully maxed out config specs are:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme X7900 (2.8GHz, 4MB Cache L2 cache, 800MHz FSB )
    Windows Vista® Ultimate
    Crimson Red
    LCD-SCHERM 17,0-inch UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1.920 x 1.200) TFT TrueLife™,. 2,0 MP webcam
    4.096 MB 667 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2 x 2.048]
500 GB SATA RAID 0 Stripe (2 x 250 GB) (5.400 rpm) - 7.200 rpm drives configs are available with less capacity at a slightly lower price
    Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8700M GT card with NVIDIA SLI-technology (512mb total)

    Intel® Pro Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-PCI-card - EUR
3 years of on site support

For the astonishing price of EURO 5.155 (approx. $ 7.217)

A 64GB Solid State Drive is available for EURO 559 extra (appox. $ 782)

    Other things of note:
    - dual link DVI connector
    - S-video connector
    - 8 in 1 card reader
    - white backlit keyboard (no color options) and backlit touchpad
    - no sleeve or backpack or anything
    - flashy lights on the front and back that can be configured to blink in synch with your games (I don't get this)
    - wifi catcher
    - Logitech gamepanel lcd
    - same remote control as comes with the 1330
    - the same earplugs as come with the 1330
    - and best of all .... a XPS1730 placemat!

I can't seem to figure out anywhere how many speakers it has and whether there's a subwoofer or not. It has only 2 speakers and no subwoofer. Also in the promo it mentions an optional tv-tuner but it's not available when configuring.

Imho the specs are pretty good but could have been better but the pricing is insane and not worth it, shipping is not even included. And it's still ugly as hell.
