My XPS M1730 is running very slowly. I am also getting an issue with Power Pack recognition which prevents me from updating BIOS, I just get an error saying Power pack and battery must be conected. THe battery no longer charges.
I have read of issues with AC jack plug, Motherboard replacement and the obvious of replacing power pack and battery.

Any advice or recomendations would be most welcome.

    Thanks

    Brian

Running slowly could be due to a bad stick of memory, or a bad hard drive, malware. Did you try running Dell diagnostics?

Check if in the bios the ac brick is shown as ac 230w. If its not you can try to change it to another one.
But since your battery is acting weird then the power controller on the mobo is going to die, if its not already dead.
If youre sure that ac and battery are fine, then change the mobo. Luckily a new mobo for the m1730 is cheaper than any other component in the laptop, you can find alot of them over ebay.

Also for those of you that dont know, when the xps m1730 seea the ac under bios as "unknown device" it forces the whole system to run into powersaving mode limiting both cpu and gpu by the chipset.
Unfortunately theres nothing you can do under windows to force it to run into a normal state since its bios limited.
Therefore it will be aloooot slow, sometimes it sits even doing normal tasks.
Thats a known symptom of mobo/ac defect across m1730 users.
