    Hey,

has anyone ever had any problems with there m1730's LCD display?

i have an external monitor hooked up and use this to extend my desktop. For some reason recently the laptops monitor has started just turning itself off / or going really dim. Its really annoying, and i am out of my warranty so i cannot get support from dell.

the external monitor works a treat, there have been no hardware changes recently, i have tried upgrading, downgrading, uninistalling etc the graphic card drivers and still nothing.

the display will show sometimes, then intermitently go off. There is no pattern i can see, it seems completely random. It doesnt stay off for any set amount of time, sometimes its a minute sometimes its 40 minutes. When it goes off and i try and reboot, i do not see the bios splash screen, so im guessing this is something to do with LCD display rather than the graphics card.

the laptop is only 2 years old, and i dont use it excessively. I only use it for work. The laptop is still in a warranty period (3 years warranty), but i am not the registered owner (i bought of someone else) so im guessing i cant rely on support for dell on this.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks

    Mike

    -LCD cable
    -Lid switch
    -LCD panel
    -CCFL Backlight

Check for a frayed LCD cable. Try slowly closing the LID and see if it hits the right spot. Also check that the backlight isnt just dead cause it might look like the whole panel is dead.

hey flipfire thanks for the reply.

Where would i check the LCD cable? i rarely close the lid on the laptop, so how else would this get frayed? Do i have to open it up to check this lcd cable?

closing the lid slowly did not change anything

with regards to the back panel, the screen does come on sometimes, and sometimes goes really dim. does this not verify the back panel is ok?

    thanks for your help

Yes the back panel is unlikely.

Here is the service manual. You will need to open it up to check the LCD cables. Just check that they are plugged in all the way and they are not damaged.

The cable will look like this:
