    Hello all,
I have an XPS M1730 that is not booting. If I hold Fn+Power, it doesn't give any LED diagnostic codes. I have a diagnostic board that plugs into the USB port, and it is saying CPU error (though, I'm not sure how much I can trust that). If I remove the RAM, it will beep and also give LED diag code for missing RAM if Fn+Power is held. The main question I have is: what CPUs are compatible with this model? I don't need to know which is the highest supported necessarily, but all of the CPUs that are supported. I might have a couple laying around that I can test with, but need to know which are compatible first. I don't want to keep tearing the whole thing down over and over again. I looked on Dell's website, but can't find a list of supported CPUs. Thanks in advance!

do you have some other memory sticks you can try - this could be a problem with the RAM.

The laptop uses Core 2 Duo Socket P processors

    T8300
    T9300
X9000 are some choices that I can recall.

I tried it again today, and now it won't power on at all. I'm thinking motherboard. Going to order one and will update when I get it installed. Thanks!

You can basically use any 800MHz FSB or less Socket P processor. It is definitely more likely to have a motherboard failure than a CPU failure though.

Well, I got the new motherboard installed, but it's still not booting. Ordered a new CPU...will see if that fixes it.

I did try that. I tried the new RAM I got (2x4GB PC2-6400), and the old RAM as well (2x1GB PC2-5300). Tried both, and also just one in each slot separately. The result is the same.
