If I have a T8300 right now and I get my hands on an X7900 can I just swap out the T8300 and put the X7900 in?

It will fit, but i'm not sure whether M1730s with X7900 have better cooling or if it's still the same one as on lower processors. I believe it's the same, seems to have enough reserve to keep even hotter processors cool.

I highly recommend the X9000 instead. It's built on a 45nm process and can be clocked higher till it reaches 3.4GHz in the M1730. It is also said that the X7900 may run a little hotter than the X9000 due to its manufacturing process @ 65nm. But either way, they're both good. Just choose either one and it should go well with it.

But for me, personally I'd take the X9000.

Anyway for either one of them make sure you give it a good undervolt and thermal paste on it. These tweaks will help make temperature differences drastically. Trust me.

X9000 has practically vanished from eBay. I think there is only one seller currently and he wants 499.00 USD for an Engineering Sample. :(

Oh my... Geez what ever happened? 499 bucks especially for an ES chip is rip off. I remembered there were so many units at that time, some even retailed for just $250 OEM.

The X7900 overclocks the same as X900. I know that because I had an M1730 with this CPU a year and a half ago. But, like you said, is a bit hot.
But it's still a very good processor!
