I'm sure someone has asked this before but I'll ask anyway.

    Is the m1710 mxm compatable?
What gfx cards cand I get if it is?
    Can I upgrade the CPU,HD,RAM.
Is it worth buying at $2,500 if I plan on doing all these things later.
Is it worth buying the m1710 at all?
    I don't want the e1750 but I have considered the m1210.

    any input is welcome.

    thanks in advance

It might be MXM, but I'm sure the card design is proprietary. Dell would have to manufacture its replacement, which is up to them entirely. Since they'd probably rather have you buy a new computer...

You can upgrade the RAM and HD without voiding the warranty, but upgrading the CPU (which is possible) would certainly void the warranty.

I would definitly up the RAM and HD.

How much ram would be poinless? For Instance, Would 4GB dual channel be a worthless overkill?

I don't care very much about warranty since If I did get this laptop, I would probably upgrade the CPU after the 1yr warranty expires.

With that being the case, how difficult would it be and What CPU speed would produce optimal performance?

As far as RAM, I would only suggest 2GB right now. It will pretty much be good enough for all the latest games and applications. If you decide to upgrade to Vista and have a C2D, you may want to upgrade to 4GB a few years down the line, but by then you'll probably want a whole new computer.

And why would you want to upgrade the CPU? Just get a 2GHz C2D and you'll be good for years to come. Not top of the line in about two years, but good to go none the less. About like a 3GHz P4 HT is good now... not hte best, but good enough.

And AFAIK, the GPU is not MXM. You should probably just get the 7950GTX. It will give you a good two years of solid gaming, as long as you don't want all the benefits of DX10.

I was planing on getting a card that would give me all the benifits of DX10. If I were to get the m1710 I would wait until DX10 was in wide spread use.
