My son just loaded rocksmith on the old xps running xp. When it loads up we get a microsoft error message.
I have a couple options, either upgrade the ram and probably BIOS, maybe the graphics card if possible to update with windows 7 or get him a new pc, which I want to avoid!
It has the Duo core 2 @ 2.66 ghz, 7950GTX GeoForce Go video card, only 2mb ram, and 150 gig hd.
I ran Belarc advisor and it says the unit is 64 bit ready, so I could try a clean install and see how that goes. Appreciate any tips.

Check that-- Here's all the correct specs from this site:

System: Dell XPS M1710 (Red color lid)
Processor: Intel Core Duo T2600 (2.16 GHz)
    Memory: 2GB @ 667MHz – 2 DIMM Slots (2 x 1GB) (Max Ram 4GB)
Hard Drive: 100GB capacity at a speed of 7200 RPM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GTX with 512MB DDR memory
    Screen: WUXGA Truelife (1920 x 1200)
    Optical Drive: 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW/+R) with Dual-Layer
    OS: Microsoft MCE 2005
    Wireless Card: Intel 3945 (802.11b/g)
Battery: 9-cell lithium ion recharegable battery
Ports / Slots: 5-in-1 Memory Card Reader, DVI-D, VGA video output, S-Video, IEEE 1394 (Firewire), 6 USB 2.0, Express Card slot, Modem, Ethernet/LAN, Microphone in, Headphone out
    Integrated Subwoofer
Price of this configuration: $4,215 (base price of black metallic M1710 starts at $2,600)

So... are you asking about what upgrades you should make or are you asking about how to solve your error? I'm not quite sure I understand what your question is.

The only thing you will be able to upgrade is the ram (Max 4GB) and the hard drive.
Windows 7 will work and you should stay with 32bit.
