I was lucky enough to receive an XPS M1530 for Christmas (2.2GHz, 8600GT, 2GB for those who are wondering). The laptop is perfect build quality wise except that there's a gap where the right display hinge is connected. I haven't decied whether I want to exchange the unit because of this or not yet.

However, I do have a question about the CPU temperature. I'm using CoreTemp to monitor the temperature (Notebook Hardware Control reports the same numbers). If I'm web browsing the temerature will start out at 45C and creep up to 58C or so at which point the fan speeds up and cools it down. What I'm more concerned about is that while playing World of Warcraft the temperature will hover around 75C. All of these temperature seem pretty high to me since my desktop Athlon X2 never exceeds 45C. The temperature in my room is about 72F. Are my temperatures too high?

I have the same gap as you. Don't return it because you will have to wait to get another one again. I think the gap is normal. My cpu temperatures are the same as yours. My HP hovers around in the 30s C. I think that is the normal behavior.

You can reduce this by quite a bit by undervolting your CPU. This will reduce cpu temps by 15C easy. You can also add some AS5 to your cpu as well.

I have the gap on the lower left and on the upper right corner. I found out that the problem with the upper right corner was that a screw was not screwed all the way in so the bezel would not fit flush with the corner. So that was an easy fix. I suspect the bottom left is the same issue but i think I'd have to take more of the laptop apart to fix that. It doesn't really bother me but I don't like the idea that crap can get down in there either.

I was thinking about both these options. I'm going to try undervolting and see if it still remains stable. About putting AS5 on the CPU...I have no problem opening it up and doing this (I've done it on computers at least 9 or 10 times), but I'd like to keep my warranty in tact since its brand new. Won't this void the warranty?

Zip if its like the 1330 there is access from the bottom and no on-site tech will care. Also you can undervolt the cpu from 1.25 to around 1.05 or so I bet. Remember this will also give you better battery life :)
