    Dear All,

I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate (from Windows Vista Ultimate) on my XPS M1530.

I have been browsing through all the other threads to see how it was for other's who installed / upgraded to Windows 7 on the 1530. Though I learnt quiet a bit, I am also equally confused to whether some issues were specific to some people or common to the M1530 hardware and drivers!!!

I just want to know, in brief, the issues I could encounter with the M1530 if I am upgrading to Windows 7 Ult. now.

I ran the microsoft upgrade advisor and it gave a clean bill except for a note on the intel proset wireless software, where it was suggested to uninstall first and then reinstall the Windows 7 version from the Intel website.

Is there anything else I should watch out for, in terms of any specific drivers for the hardware and such? Or can I just go ahead with the upgrade?

    Thanks a lot.

PS., I apologize if this has been discussed before here, but I want to have a couple of expert opinions on the latest with this upgrade on the M1530.

    Cheers and good day.

Should be OK. My upgrade went without a hitch. You'll probably have to use the Vista drivers from Dell's website still (I'm pretty sure they still haven't updated them), but they work just fine. For your wireless and graphics though, grab them from Intel and laptopvideo2go respectively.

    Thanks a lot.

Yes, I just was aware of these two.

I also read about some issues with the soundcard (sigmatel), fingerprint reader and the touch buttons?? Of course, these are from previous, old posts and the user's had resolved each of them in some way.

But I want to know if they all have been fixed in general or should I also go about following what the others did before?

    Thanks a lot once again.

    Cheers.

PS., btw, I never quiet got a hang of this - can I upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit??? or should it be just to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit?

I never had any trouble with the Sigmatel software. My touch buttons work just fine (I don't even have Quickset installed because it annoyed me). I've never even tried the fingerprint reader so I wouldn't have a clue if that works or not, but I'm pretty sure others have it working fine.

Upgrade installs (i.e. keeps your current stuff intact and just writes over Windows) can't go between platforms (i.e. you can't go from 32bit to 64bit or vice versa). Clean installs (or performing a clean install from an upgrade disc) is the only way you could go from Vista x86 to 7 x64.

I went for a straight upgrade from Vista 64 to Windows 7 and even all my drivers worked out fine. I upgraded them for good measure though. 1530 works like a champ, go for it.

I would recommend a fresh installation.

Here I am, writing from Windows 7 on the M1530 - Upgrade was perfect, system is working as usual, had absolutely no issues with any drivers or anything - the only recommendation for compatibility was that I reinstall the intel proset wireless software and it wasn't a big deal either.

Everything else is working just as perfectly. All program's and files are all in their places, settings perfectly fine and basically I just wanted to say there was absolutely no issue as of now.

And I am loving Windows 7 Ultimate :) It's awesome, so fast, neat, and I love it. :)

    Thanks to all, anyways.

    Cheers and best wishes

    Update:

Had some minor issues with bluetooth. I could connect from the phone to the laptop but not the other way. I was not able to add a new device from the laptop either.

So googling led me to many suggestions, including uninstalling the bluetooth software and reinstalling the same and also getting the latest from broadcomm directly (which is what I did).

But I still had the same problem, and then I found < this >

It seems to work fine now.

Just thought I'll let this be known here. Cheers.

7 working very well on my system, I recommend the upgrade. You will need to install some of the vista 64 drivers from the dell site, but you won't need to install the chipset driver (did it and windows got screwed, had to reinstall), and you should install the official up-to-date nVidia driver.
