The screen on my XPS M1530 stopped working tonight. It went bright white with some vertical lines and has not worked since. When I restart it shows blue for a while and then eventualy washes out and goes dark.

I'm using an external monitor right now an everything else seems OK. I assume the display is fried, but before I take it back to where I bought it (Best Buy), does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Rick

Bummer! If it is the video card can they replace it without wiping out the hard drive? I'm backed up, but it'll really be a PIA to re-load all the software!

    fail

if an external display works fine, it means there is something wrong with the laptops lcd or cable

it's most likely the inverter. First thing to check is if you can display on an external monitor. If you can, then it's either the display itself, the ribbon cable, or the inverter. If you cannot, it's the video card.

The next thing to try is to look at the display is a darkened room. If the inverter is the culprit, you will see a very faint image during the booting process. The "Dell" screen is usually visible - although just barely.

If the ribbon cable is the culprit, you can sometimes get an image by moving the display to a different position. On some Dell's (not the 1530) you can press on the top part of the power button cover right over where the ribbon cable is, and sometimes it will make the display come on. It doesn't look to me like that is an option on a 1530 because of the way the thing is built.

Any of these things can be easily repaired, and will not require your hard drive to be touched.

    Try two things:

    1. When you push the power button also hold down the 'd' key. This will put the laptop into a display test mode. If the Inverter isn't bad you should see dim screens of blue, red, and then green.

    2. If that works, with your external display hooked up, push the power button and hold down the 'fn' key. This will put it into a diagnostics mode and it'll run through a bunch of tests. If the video cable is bad, or the inverter it'll eventually throw an error.

This happened to mine and Dell ended up replacing my motherboard.

Seems someone didn't do their homework and just hopped on the bandwagon to say the videocard is defective.

The external display works fine, so I guess it's the LCD screen on the XPS. I never see anything on the laptop screen except for a bright white display, that gradually fades to blue and then black.

Thanks for all the responses ... back to Best Buy I go! Glad to hear the hard drive should be OK.

OK, stopped at Best Buy and described the problem, and I am still under warranty which is good. However, they do not do the repairs at the store and need to send it off. They estimated I could be 3 weeks without my laptop ... Not Good! I'm going to try and contact Dell directly to find out if I have any local warranty service options.

Anyway, I did try test mode tonight (Hold down Fn when power on). Nothing but beeps from the first test. However, the second screen test does show alternating red, green and blue screens on the laptop LCD followed by a series of 5 beeps that repeat a few times. The laptop screen was then blank, so I decided to Fn-F8 to switch to the external monitor, and it was showing the diagnostic screen with an error code: 2000-0334. Anyone know what that error code means?

    Thanks,

    Rick

PSA+ 2000-0334: User reported that graphics patterns were not displayed correctly.

That probably doesn't help you a bit but you did ask...
