I recall someone were able to install Windows XP on the XPS M1530, but going to Dell Support site I don't see ANY drivers for Windows XP, only Vista. Does it means that installing Windows XP on the XPS M1530 is not possible?

If you can find drivers from other sites you could get it to work. Personally, i wouldnt be afraid of vista, its not that bad. In fact, i can use both xp and vista on all my machines, but i use vista because i like it better.

If you configure the 1530 through the dell business site you have your choice to purchase it with XP or Vista so they have to have drivers available somewhere to work with XP.

I don't see it on Dell Business Site, only for Vostro. But I have already ordered the XPS M1530 now, so I can't change it.

I want to use XP until Vista stabilized (SP1?), because I have heard many incompatibilities either through this forum or other website. I will primarily be using the machine for games and software development, including system testing via VMWARE.

M1530 will work with XP as well since the hardware used in it is almost the same as 1400, 1420, 1500, 1520, 1700, 1720 and M1330 series of laptops..... And also some drivers like Intel Chipset, Ethernet, etc. are designed to work with both XP as well as Vista.... And for those which you dont get the drivers from DELL site (almost all are available from DELL support site itself) you can get them on the web for sure..... Many had been facing Audio driver problems in XP.... FOr that a patch needs to be applied before installing the drivers.....

Thanks for the information. So what you're saying is:
    - Vista drivers WILL WORK on Windows XP
    - Vista Audio driver MAY NOT work on Windows XP, requiring a patch.

Do you mind sending me the link for this Audio patch? I searched the forum but the results are not right. Maybe my forum-searching skill is not great yet. ;)

What I actually meant was 50% of the Vista drivers also work on Xp.... Some like Sound, Graphics, etc. dont work.... Xp drivers for graphics are easy to obtain for both nvidia as well as Intel ones too.... As far as I've come across on the forum many had problems installing Audio drivers on Xp.... What actually you need to do is along with the Audio driver downloaded from DELL in that EXE, there is a patch file too.... You need to run that before installing the Audio driver.... Also the driver setup didnt detect and install the soundcard drivers for me in Xp.... Instead using the Device Manager I had to manually install the drivers by pointing out the location of the INF file... Also if DELL does not provide official drivers for XP for M1530 - you can try one of the 1520's XP drivers too....

    Thanks for the info.
I just purchased the M1530 too, and I need to install windows XP for work. I'll check upon this thread for progress. It would be greatful, if anybody succeed install fully functioning XP post here with drivers they used and instructions. When I receive my notebook, I'll call Dell to see if they can help.

Yup it would work as they use the same components, just different sizes.

I'm not aware of any VMware issues with Vista, I'm running WS without issues. Certainly better than trying to get XP installed just to run a VM product.
