I wish I had found this place BEFORE I ordered my M1530 on Sunday. I have a feeling I spent too much $ for the system I really need.

What I mostly use my laptop for is word processing, email, internet surfing (I tend to have many different windows open at once), with lots of streaming video viewing (at network sites and YouTubes, etc). I also usually have BitComet running, downloading several large video files at once.

I want to be able to have fast downloads and not slow down my machine for the other things I'm doing.

I need my laptop to arrive to me with what I need already installed -- I don't want to have to order and install stuff myself, so ordering a bare-bones machine and doing add-ons is not an option. But I do want the best machine I can get and don't mind spending the $ to get it. However, if what I've ordered is just overkill, I would like to know that, since I don't want to just throw money away on upgrades that aren't going to significantly improve performance.

Here is what I ordered -- where might I be able to cut back on unnecessary items? (For instance, how does everybody feel about the extended warranty? Is that really necessary? And is there any huge advantage to getting Vista Ultimate instead of just Home Premium?) Any help would be appreciated:

hmm, i believeyou can still cancel

first of all, i would cancel anyway because dell charges WAY too much for ram, its much cheaper for yourself to do it. i would buy the lowest amount and then buy 4gb from newegg or ebay, etc.

and no, theres no huge difference when getting ultimate

you also really dont need the t7800, the t7300 and above should be fine for you. u probably wouldnt even know the difference from the t7500-t7800 wtih what ur doing. and the cost to performance ratio is not worth it for thet t7800. i believe the t7300 and the t7500 is the best bang for your buck

and the warranty is def worth it, always knowing u can even drop it down the stairs is a plus. plus 3 years down the road, they could just replace your whole computer with a new model if they dont carry the 1530 anymore, which they probably wont.

You probably won't need the T7800. A T 7500 should be more than adequate. The 4GB of ram seems excessive, but that would depend on how many things you actually want running at the same time.

Do you intend to be gaming? If not, the 8400 should be enough for you.

Warranty's are a matter of personal choice and luck I guess.

edit: If you do reorder, check out the $200 XPS coupon if you haven't already done so.

You should get 1GB and buy ram separately... Also processor is probably overkill. 2-2.2GHz should be plenty... If you are not into gaming downgrade the graphics card (you will get better battery life that way as well)...
You should be able to cancel.... use the $200 coupon if its still available when reordering... or order through Dell's employee program which will give you a discount because of the 3 yr warranty....

imho Vista Ultimate does not add enough over Premium... it has a couple of features I like such as the backups of previous versions of documents but not worth the $s...

I appreciate the responses. I am going to try to cancel and reorder. I was just over in the thread about 5400 rpm HD vs. 7200 and I'm thinking about saving another $96 by going with the bigger (250 GB) 5400 as opposed to the 200 GB 7200. Any thoughts or recommendations on that?

For your purposes, I'd go with the savings.

So long as your order hasn't shipped, you should be able to cancel your order. I called their custom service number (should be in their contact us section on their website) to change my order because their prices dropped. I had the option of canceling my order and placing a new one, or being transferred to the tech department and having them adjust the specs of my current machine. I chose to cancel and reorder.

Thanks again to all who responded. I was able to cancel, and my reorder saved me $745 and has an ESD of only one day later (12/27). Plus, I got a 4th year on the warranty for $10 (well, $10 after I get the $70 gift card). Merry Christmas to me!

I think with my savings and my $270 in Dell gift cards, I'm going to get a flat-panel TV as a Happy New Year's present to me!

Oops. Typo in ESD -- that's 12/27, not 12/17. Wishful typing!

Sounds like a good plan. You can use the HDMI-out on the M1530 to hook it up to your new TV :)
