the trackpad from my old Inspirion 4150. The Synaptics hardware is so much nicer. If only there was some driver crack that added browsing (back, front) and better scrolling capabilities, my assumption is that it is a hardware limitation though.

Thanks for all the info regarding this XPS model, like many of us I read about my new toy forever before purchasing it. I am quite happy with it!

There is no hardware limitation. People have been using drivers from older notebooks for these features. I am currently hunting trying to figure out which ones people are using. I am using a vostro 1500

Don't know if that's the case for all. My understanding is that if it indicates it is a Synaptics touchpad in the device manager then you can load the synaptics driver and the functionality will be restored.

My device manager reports it as a Dell Touchpad. I loaded a synaptics driver and tried it out but it didn't give me all the selections for the pad, just the buttons.

If this can be changed please chime in and help me make it happen.

    Thanks

Hmmm, appreciate the help but this version of the driver (7.1.102.7) is what I currently have installed. Is this the same version that shows in your device manager? Maybe I'm just loosing it, what screen are you setting the back/front and the run application info in? When I double click my touchpad icon in the tray I don't see those selections.

I really do appreciate you taking the time in responding to my message, I have searched high and low for a solution with no luck.

Unfortunately this has not appeared to work for me, here are the steps I took:
    1) Control Panel/Uninstall Programs/Dell Touchpad - Did this to prevent the reinstall of the driver upon restart
    2) Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Mice and other pointing devices/Dell Touchpad (also have HID-compliant mouse listed)/Driver/Uninstall
    3) Restart - When booted back up I lost all touchpad response as expected verifying the driver was removed
    4) Keyed over to the R165804 folder that housed all the files that were unzipped and ran the setup.exe file. Multiple executables but wasn't sure which one to use.
    5) Restart - Touchpad functionality restored. Double clicking the tray icon brings up the same screen I had prior to Uninstall/Install.

Attached are a few pics of what I see. Anything you can do to further help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Again!

Looks like you don't have a Synaptics Touchpad. It's Alps.

    If that matters.

Do you not have Quickset autoload? If not what functionality do you loose? My assumption is that you loose the WiFi Catcher functionality but is there anything else?

Bummer, it didn't work. I read about the features of QuickSet and decided that I would much rather have my touchpad functionality back.

Went to msconfig and ticked off quickset restared and then went through the driver removal and reload and nothing is different. I hate to ask but are you sure that the driver version that you had posted at the beginning is accurate and matches what your device manager says you have? It just seems odd that it is the same version that I have loaded and we both have an Alps touchpad but your driver works different than mine. When you goto the Add/Remove programs listing does your Dell Touchpad software read Alps as the Publisher (image attached)?

I don't get it. What could we possibly be missing? Did you tweak your installed bundle when you received your system or did you leave all the default stuffs on?

Thanks for your persistence it helping me figure this one out.

Score!!! Driver R140031 does it and gives me the Alps/Dell driver above. Much more functionality although not all of it works in Firefox, my Synaptics driver worked in all browsers.

On to the about:config file to see if I can get the back/forward working correctly in Firefox, although it works perfectly with IE as well as giving a much smoother scroll I'd rather use Firefox.

Thanks to all for the help!

Yeah but you are using a Synaptics driver. I just downloaded the one you linked to and will give it a shot.

No go on the Synaptics driver and man is it hard to get rid of. Didn't figure it would work on an Alps touchpad but I figured I'd try.

    Thanks!

You could try this one. It's from a Toshiba with an alps pad. I can't get the gestures working, but it recognises the pad touch in the settings. It has some quite nice options also. I have managed to install some synaptic dirvers, but usually with limited functionality. I have the asus eee-pc synaptic driver, which has loads and loads of options on the asus, but nothing on my xps except the button actions :( But the driver works without any errors.

They might be able to be hacked in some way via the inf or something.

I just used the following procedure after installing the R140031 driver. All gestures now work in Firefox! Thanks for your legwork.

Thnks to this comment https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202615#c57 I was able to get the forward/back feature of the Alps touchpad working with firefox.

    Here is how:
    1. backup apoint.exe
    2. Open apoint.exe in a hexeditor. Search for Netscape. Replace with Firefox (i.e. " Firefox"). As we are hex-editing, we have to make sure that eight characters in Netscape are replace with eight characters. Apoint matched this to the last 8 characters of the window title. Thankfully our window title is "something something Mozilla Firefox"!
    3. Either a) restart or b) kill the apoint.exe process in task manager. Doubleclick the apoint.exe you just edited to launch the firefox friendly version!

    4. If this works, thank Marc Neuberger

Thanks for the additional post on this tread, I am 100% functional now. Never was able to get the settings in about:config to work like expected.

Crazy how you have to edit the Apoint.exe, bad driver design by Alps in my opinion but I don't know much about designing drivers.

All I know is that I'm good to go and love it. Thanks to all!!!
