I know the Vista vs XP debate has been going on here. I also know there is a pretty large consensus of people who want to convert their XPS M1330s to XP when they arrive, including me but have no idea where to start.

I lack the knowledge or experience to do this and was wondering if it could become a sticky or guide since Im sure there are others here who want to do the same but dont know how.

Could we start with a step by step list and link the necessary drivers. With everyone here contributing, I think we could created a pretty good guide for everyone to follow. I apologize if this is too much to ask or for a single person to contribute to, just thought it would be a great idea.

Ok...lets start with this first... Why would anyone want to reduce their system to XP functionality as it is an antiquated OS, falling short of course of dual boot functionality.

ide really like some answers here on this...

How about we wait until someone gets their system before we start asking questions about how to modify it?

And please we have done the XP vs Vista thing already.

Compatibility issues??? Hmm Ive seen very little of this on a per user basis, whereas, yes businesses are the exception because of proprietary software of which it will be expensive to buy new upgraded net programs.

m1330 uses SATA? if it does you will have a tough task installing windows XP. unless you intergrade the XP with SATA or use a disk.

I seriously doubt there'll be sticky just for 1330... And you prolly will be able to find some sort of guide for a general laptop on the web and find the drivers on your own... or just wait until someone goes through the process and makes a post describing it :)

Uhm, no. You need sata drivers only if you using raid... which ain't an option for any notebook.

I have a general XP guide for Dell laptops that might be some use. The problem with the drivers is that it varies from user to user, so creating one thread won't exactly help. I do have a post that explains what most of the drivers are and gives details as to which are necessary and which aren't.

If you have trouble, feel free to create a thread with the drivers you are missing (this will be shown in your Device manager), and we can give you help with anything that you are missing.

As for the SATA questions, I've done numerous walk throughs on formatting SATA drives w/ XP and ran into no problems. Majority of the users just wait until after XP is installed and then install the drivers from a disc/usb jumpdrive/internet.

While I will agree that we don't need a strictly m1330 drivers section, it is important to point out that the drive in this laptop does not have a manual eject button as on most drives.

Therefore, this driver or a workaround is critical to being able to install XP.

    Agreed?

I had the same problems gathering all the drivers. Expecially with the graphic card, where you have to used a hacked .inf file. See my howto on installing XP on the m1330.

What you are asking for is already created in the forum. Your title is misleading and next time use the Search function before you post!

For many people, XP runs faster. If you tweak Vista, you might get it to run faster, but, based solely on published requirements, you can do more with less on XP. For another example, Pinnacle Studio's requirements for RAM and GPU RAM in vista are double those of XP. That's not a good thing, in my book.

You're also not really "reducing" functionality in any meaningful way, either - I can do anything I need to in either OS. Personally, I prefer Vista because of the much-maligned UAC and the nicer UI, but I otherwise would prefer XP, as it flies with 4 GB, whereas Vista merely runs well.

YEAH DUAL BOOT RULES. id be willing to work with someone to compose a drivers list for dell laptops. but not alone, like i said, with someone else.

that manual eject button thing, when i installed xp, i had no problem ejecting the disc at any point during the reformat (for vista), mediadirect install, xp install, and vista boot repair. im guessing whatever makes the touch sensitive buttons work are integrated or something.

I realize I'm resurrecting an old thread--except that this thread just seemed to end in limbo.

Installing XP onto the Dell XPS series is not that difficult, although it does take some hunting at times. I didn't have to hack any .inf files or streamline any OS disks, although it did require building from a newer Dell Windows XP SP2 Installer disk...

A rough outline is on my blog.
