    Hi all,

I bought the XPS M1330 when it first came out in the UK

I have the T7100 1.8ghx CPU and 2GB Ram and Running Vista Business

I find that authoring DVDs and playing games can be a bit slow, so I wanted to Upgrade the power of my CPU.

Can anyone suggest a good CPU to upgrade to, which is compatable with the 1st M1330 ? - I hear that the T9300 is a good one but I dont know anythiing about compatability?

Also, wouyld you recommend another 3GB of RAM? - (Even though I hear that Vista 32 bit only supports 3GB RAM?)

    Thanks in advance,

    Graham

'another 3GB of ram' ???? NO! your computer likely only supports 4GB, but it's possible that it supports 8GB 2x4GB

right now you have 1x2GB and 1x1GB sticks installed. and there is no such thing as 3GB ram modules.

Vista 32bit supporst 3.12GB of ram, if you upgrade to 64bit, you chipset would them be the decideing factor.

as for processor there shouldn't be any problems with the upgrade, just make sure your bios is up-to-date.

    Hi

Sorry, I mean 3 Gb in total with Vista 32

Currently I have 2x1GB modules installed
Current CPU Supports 64 bit, but I don't want to install a 64bit OS due to the lack of driver functionality!

I'll install a total of 4GB Ram and just let vista waste 1 gb, its worth it in my opinion.

So that CPU will be fine? - Are there better ones in the same price range?

    Thanks !!

The T8300 is the current best bang for buck.

GOOD NEWS!!! all the drivers are fine dude...I have my M1330 with 64bit since 2 weeks after I got it lol

everything works perfect (fast little thing too)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=158277&page=1

Just follow the instructions and everything comes out great

BTW: the T8300 will be (like said above) the BEST bang for the buck...the T9300 is just too pricey for the little improvement it brings...but if you have money to spare...have fun :)

Thanks, I'll go got that CPU then.
One question on 32 to 64 bit:
Do I have to buy a new version of vista?
I already own Business 32bit and Home Premium 32bit So if I want vista Business 64 bit, then I have to buy a new version?
If I can't use the 32bit serial for then 64 bit installation, then can I upgrade?

Also, How is the compatability with new devices? eg. I have a few External hard drives and usb sound card, Dell mouse and targus express card docking station. Do you know if there will be any probs with installing drivers for these?
and how about software, does 64bit OS's disallow certain software and games from being installed?

    Interesting!

What does? RAM? - If so I am getting 4GB (From 2) along with the CPU

Will the new CPU speed up things like DVD authoring and photo file conversions?

    Thanks

    re: RAM

The M133O and all Santa-Rosa chipset-based laptops will support exactly 3.5 GB of memory in 32-bit Vista unless you have a 512 MB-1 GB graphics card in there.

Older chipsets will only support 3.25 or less, depending on the graphics card and a few other variables, but if you have a graphics card with 256 MB or less discrete RAM, you will typically see the full 3.25 GB on the 945 chipset and 3.5 GB on the new 965 Santa-Rosa Chipset.

There will be no problem whatsoever with the external stuff..I have external HD's and Bluetooth mouse..no problem

Programs that are not 64 bit -- No problem either....Windows makes a 32 bit Program File folder (oddly enough called Program Files X86)

Now the 64-bit Vista DVD IF you bought a version of vista (not OEM from Dell) You can call Microsoft (or there is a website somewhere) you ask for the 64bit version...comes up to like 12 bux shipped.

^^^From what I read that's what you have to do and your good :)

It's not a hard install....just follow the directions (especially the SATA driver part) and you will be perfect and enjoying 64bit dude :)
