Problem: I have to lend my laptop to my friends for use. I have VLC installed which is capable to increasing the volume to insane levels. Also setting high volume on built in JBL has damaged them once.

I am not looking to purchase volumelock 2.3 software which BTW is a good utility but it's not a freeware.

Please suggest any means, including registry hack to disable them, while keeping the headphone jacks working normally.

Some of the registry editing has been mentioned in the below thread as well, only it has the different requirement than me :)

Right click on the Taskbar Volume volume icon and choose Playback Devices. (or go Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound) Righ click on Speakers > Choose Disable. Right Click again and untick "Show Disabled Devices".

Your speakers should be disabled, your headphone jack should still work. Since the disabled speakers won't be visible, it should not be downright easy to enable them back.

You could also physically disconnect the speakers, although i don't know how easy that is in the 502x.

Tried doing that already, but that disables the headphone jacks as well. There is no option specific to built in speakers, not even in the realtek soundcard controller software.

If anyone would just try and help me out with the registry thing.
From this thread, http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/622035-disabling-headphone-jack-detection.html it seems that it's possible.

It worked for me, however i'm using different hardware and Microsoft's default audio drivers. My hunch is it works due to the default drivers.
