    Hello All,

I just received my new XPS L502X and I have to say I really love this laptop. I do however have a very small gripe about the backlit keyboard. I am wondering if this is normal or if mine is defective. I have noticed that my number 8 key is slightly dimmer than the rest. It actually looks like it is missing an LED or the LED is not in the same location as the rest.

Am I being too picky or do I have an issue? I have attached a picture to show what it looks like. It looks more apparent in person.

    Thanks

I haven't opened my laptop, but I would expect that it might not be an individual LED per key.

My keyboard has the digit 9 slightly dimmer than the other keys, and maybe the 0 as well. It may just be normal slight variations.

I have that issue too. I have no idea about it but also the 8 key is the worst but on my laptop all the numerical numbers 1-0 are like half lit. the symbol is lit but only half of the number is lit. I can post pictures if needed

The number 9 and 0 on my L702x isn't as bright as the others, but I'm pedantic about things like that.

It's normal, you can see the placement of the LEDs if you lift up the key caps a little bit. They seem to be placed on the upper side under the key caps.

my windows key is like this, when i push down the key it becomes more illuminated though as the material on the key is pushed down and the light is less distorted, I didn't word this very well but I hope you can see what i mean when you push down a key

    Hi,

Even thou this thread is a little old now has anyone got there problem resolved ?

    Reason:

I bought a Dell XPS L702X in November and the number 8,9,0 key had the same brightness as all the others and the leds on each key was all in the same position and of same brightness.

However I had a new XPS L702X (replacement) off Dell last week because old laptop nearly every component got replaced as the hardware kept failing and it caused me hell so Dell finally agreed to replace the laptop with the new replacement XPS L702X that i got now.

However the new laptop the number 8,9 and 0 keys are dimmer, as i still had old laptop until it was picked up this morning i compared them a few days ago and my findings was right that the keyboard in the first XPS i had had two leds underneath the number 8 key and was same position as rest also the number 8, 9 and 0 key was of same brightness of other keys. On the new system however the bottom left of the number 8 key has no led only has one in bottom right when every key has two in bottom left and right. I then tilted laptop and noticed the number 8 key does have two led lights but the one which should be in the bottom left is actually on the left side like it should be but much higher, basically not aligned like all the others, it only seems to be the number 8 key that has one led that is positioned differently to all the other keys but this makes the 8,9 and 0 key less dimmer than the others.

An Engineer just came out and replaced the entire keyboard and he also agreed and said the same, even after replacing the keyboard i have the same issue/problem. The engineer also agreed that the three keys are still dimmer than the others.

The engineer left my property and called a few minutes later and he said he found that others are having the same problem after doing a Google search, so i did a Google search and found this thread.

The engineer is calling Dell to tell them about the issue and me not being the old one but i asked the engineer to tell Dell to call me asap about the issue, as Dell was calling me anyway to see if i'm happy now as they know the amount of problems i had and they are trying there best to keep me happy now after the run ins i originally had with them over first laptop.

The problem is frustrating and is very noticeable in the dark. I have also just posted on the Dell forum.

Maybe others can post on my thread on the Dell forum who has this issue and maybe It maybe forwarded to Dell engineers or something for investigation as the Dell forum does have Dell staff on there.

The reason why i know there is a problem is because the first laptop keyboard did not have this issue, the number 8,9,0 key was of same brightness as the other keys and the number 8 key had two leds in bottom left and right yet some of the keyboards obviously have the number 8 key where the is only one led in the front and the other led is much far back and not aligned like all other leds and the keys are dimmer.

Here is the link to my post on the Dell forum

    Thanks
    Mathew

I noticed this on my Vostro 3750 today on the 8 key
9 seems fine 0 is a touch dimmer but its uniform

On first look i presumed it was a dead led on 8
but when you look at it from an angle there's
something copper like close to where all the other buttons have an led

never the less the 8 is annoying as not only is 8 much dimmer
but the bottom left of 8 is dimmer than the rest

Installed a new backlit keyboard to my L702x, and I experiencing same problem. Number '8' and some of the keys right under '8' seems a little bit dimmer. Looks like this is common. Not a big deal, though. The keyboard and it's illumination is awesome!
