My Blu-ray drive is starting to play up, tried a cleaning disc but the problem remains. Looking to replace it with a new one, I'm based in the UK. There's some on eBay but just checking that I order the correct one. Could someone point me to the correct drive please.
    Thanks for any help

Look on your BD drive and see what is says it will be either a Sony BD or Panasonic BD if it is IDE connection as for sata there are some in Panasonic drive. Just use your same drive model number and you most likely will come up with some hits to match.

Its a hitachi lge-dm ct30n drive, does it matter what make of drive I use. If I buy any sata drive will it plug and play, or is it firmware dependent?

I have/had (dead now) the L501x as well. My blu ray player was a generic one from dell.
The model doesn't matter. As long as it's a slim, notebook compatible one with the sata connector.
Look for the panasonic UJ240 on amazon; it's an example of one that should fit.
They usually don't come with the face plate though (the chrome cover that has the eject button and bluray sign) so you'd have to carefully unclip the one on your old BR drive and attach it to the one you buy.

if I can put any drive in, are there any laptop drives faster than 6X speed?

Have no idea, you'll have to do some personal research on that. Blurays usually max at 6x, dvds at 8x, and cds at 24x. There could possibly be higher speeds though but I don't know for sure.
