I called Dell and asked for the part # and price for the XPS 15 backlit keyboard. The part # is 0KMP3 and the price is $44.99. I ordered me one :)

Good to know for the USA. I hope it comes available soon in Europe. Does not sound much for a backlit keyboard.

Awesome and totally worthwhile purchase! Ever since I first had one of these backllit keyboards I've been getting them when I can. Very convenient. :)

Do you happen to have the reference of such keyborad for XPS 14? Is it the same piece?

I would like to have mine replaced as well.

Anyone in the US want to get hold of one and sell it on to me in the UK? :)
You could make a bit of profit from it.

My opinion is to go for backlit keyboard whenever available. Right now my spouse and kid are sleeping and I'm sitting in the same room and writing this post on a backlit keyboard :D . It has 3 levels of light power (none/half/full) and is awesome!

You've got three screws, 1 to remove the palmrest and 2 that hold the keyboard on. Then of course the 2 cables to plug into the motherboard. That's about 10 minutes tops to tear down, install, and wrap it back up.

As the XPS line just came out, OEM parts are still hard to come by not sourced through Dell. I would contact Dell and get it ordered, 44 dollars for a keyboard isn't a bad price at all.

I'm wondering if I could get the new xps 15 r2 backlit KB as opposed to r1 for my xps 14(looking at the part number, they are the same one for 14 and 15).

    Brb trying!

Edit: No luck, they wanted my service tag to find the keyboard and I obviously don't have one. Anyone know the part number of the xps15 R2 backlit KB?

Edit2: Tried again with the info provided by Rick 64D, I was able to get them to check the KB for me, but was told it's not up for separate sale ;<

Edit: Is it really necessary to remove RAM and HDD and ODD in order to remove palm rest?

I just contacted Dell to enquire about a backlit keyboard. They took my service tag and told me that the motherboard on my laptop doesnt support the backlit keyboard because the port for the power is not on it. I thought that the port would be present on all of them as they could all be customised to it?

I have an xps 14 i5 I got in australia from Student PC Offer

    thats so weird

anybody have any input on this?

The first time they delayed it there was a link to "consent to the delay", and I clicked it. No further notification after it and now they just canceled it. Gonna call in tomorrow to see what happened. Probably low/no supply due to the new xps 15 using a a different keyboard.

That's nonsense. When I ordered mine the Dell rep told me all I need to do is connect the extra wire to the motherboard. And when I opened mine up yesterday, I do see an empty port on the motherboard.

So the Dell rep said that you CAN upgrade and that you just need to connect the wire to the motherboard, and then when you opened it up there was an empty port. Sorry if i mistook you but makes perfect sense to me?

My rep said that my motherboard supposedly does not have the empty port for connecting a backlit keyboard

Could there be a difference between the i5 and i7 motherboards?

For the record I think I am one of the very few in Australia who have an xps 14 with an i5

As far as I know you can have backlit keyboard on both i5 and i7, so I doubt you're missing the port. Your rep must be trolling you. If you can order it, order it. If you want to make sure, open up your rig and check for the port.

I had a great saga getting hold of one in the UK. I phoned up asking about the part, after few times eventually I just asked that Dell call when they're in stock and I was pretty cool with that.
After an overheating issue with my laptop and terrible customer service incident they offered like-for-like replacement machine, I said okay, my machine was only about 4 months old but I'd been stood up by engineers 5 times, didn't see any harm in a new machine and thought this is finally my chance for the backlit keyboard.
I said I would only do it if they fitted a backlit keyboard, Dell informed me they were currently out of stock. They would ship it without and send me one free of charge once for me to fit once they were back. I was told it would be 2 weeks to a month wait. Then I could sell my standard keyboard on eBay.
2 months later I ring them, am told the backlit keyboard is not available in the European market, and never was. Went crazy at them as I would never have taken the replacement machine without the backlit keyboard (Sounds petting upgrade but machine was fully specced) Originally I would have taken some sort of external peripheral instead.
Eventually they offer me a refund on the entire unit, the warranty and the FHD screen.
I call Dell to order a new machine and suddenly they have the backlit keyboard available as an option. It may be Dell are just reserving them for new builds however don't let them troll you. They are out there! Still isn't an option on their website.
Always order by phone and suddenly the limited stock options open up!

It was always my unicorn... Now I've caught it!

Just ordered mine, went through smoothly. Just told them I ordered mine refurbished and was told I could later place an order for the backlit keyboard, since it wasn't an option when I first ordered it. They didn't give me any run around. I also provided them with the 0KMP3 part number, told them another Dell representative gave it to me. I'm in California, although I imagine it should be possible for anyone in the U.S. to place an order just as easily. I have read a couple people having trouble. So I'll try to give an update if it doesn't appear on the predicted April 28th date.

Could I clarify with those people who have ordered a replacement keyboard. Are the two cables attached to the keyboard physically and cannot be unattached?

I ask as i have a xps14 with a normal keyboard which i want to replace with backlit. Dell AU are saying its $110 with 8 week wait but I have found an altenate source that says he has an unopened package from a dell wholesaler but that no cables are included and that all cables needed should already be inside the laptop.

A bit unsure if I alredy have the backlit cable attached. Doubt it.

Although if the cables attach only on one side and are fixed to the keyboard then this illiminates teh problem as this would mean that the keyboard would come shipped with the cables attached.

    Thanks

Last I checked there is no way to remove the cables. Here is a shot of my backlit keyboard before I installed it:

It is one for an Inspiron 17 but is the same for the L701x.

Thanks for that. It appears as if the cable is attached (and un-detachable) from the keyboard it self. This would mean that a backlit keyboard should come with all cables required already attached to it meaning the ebay keyboard seller would be wrong that no cables are included

I just got mine, I didn't take a picture, but mine had two cables already attached as well. Mine went off at a different angle then the one pictured above, but my xps 15 (l501x) had the port for the power already on the motherboard.

It didn't appear to be at all detachable on mine either.

I just ordered on Dell Chat, it took less than 5 minutes cost $47 and change with tax, should be delivered in 3-5 days.

I just bought an i7 1.73ghz 6gb 640gb 7200rpm RGB LED 1080p 2gb GT435M DVD R/W non backlit non Bluetooth 9 cell for $750 on Amazon.com that is two weeks old from a law student who got it as a gift and already had a MBP. Seemed like a decent deal, just need to figure out how to add bluetooth to complete it just like I want, didn't get the Sandy Bridge but the price was right, could you imagine trying to buy a bad screen ASUS or HP for this price? No way.

    Hi,

    @fcfarul

To order a L502X Backlit keayboard, you can call dell.

    @barlow00

Do you know when the L501X backlit keayboard will be availabled on Kuzotronic with a french layout ?
Because I don't know if Latin/Spanish means that the L501X keyboard has the éàçè ... keys.

I will definitely be getting some more US boards in very shortly and I will enquire about French, but I doubt it.

I will post on here if/when I get some in.

    Cheers
