Ive sent off an email about the issue anyway......Im still wondering is this a widespread issue or are people happy enough with the flex? Im afraid it might cause problems further down the line

I guess it depends on your frame of reference. I've been working on an Inspiron 8600 for 8 years. Very spongy keyboard. There hot tip back in 2003 was to place dense foam tape under the keyboard in several places to reduce the flex. It helped some.

By comparison, the keyboard in the L702X is a plank.

Seriously? My old system was inspiron 6400 (3 years old) and it's as stiff as a board, I was expecting much better quality seems it's 3 times the price I payed for the inspiron...

Can you describe how much flex your getting??

This happened with the L701x series as well, and I believe that it was deduced that since the case was configured to have the backlit keyboards(which I know, it's not right) hince the "extra" space that allows the keyboard to flex. Just another oversight by Dell....

I assume the keyboard in L702x is the same as in the L701x. I had a uk non-backlit L701x keyboard that came with the laptop. I replaced it with a US backlit keyboard (bought from Kuzotronic). The backlit keyboard definitely feels much better than the default non-backlit ones.

Backlit keybord was not an option on the Irish dell site, Id say the both of you are spot on tho, there seems to be way too much space behind the board leaving room for the backlit option....

i have some keyboard flex but i don't know if its enough to justify getting a new keyboard fitted.... how much was you keyboard flexing JK? If i push the keyboard a little in the middle where the K and L keys are, it does flex a little, but not really sure how serious it is.

There shouldn't be any flex at all. But I guess it is up to you what you are willing to live with. With the amount of money invested, I personally would not be satisfied until it met my approval, but then again with request to fix the problem, comes the added aggravation of dealing with Dell's hoops we all have to jump through just to get what we ordered. It is what it is...
Sorry for not being so positive, but I am being as truthful as my experience will allow.

I've got the Inspiron 8600 and the L702x side by side right now. Pressing Enter on the Inspiron, the entire right third of the keyboard flexes centered around that key. The key itself can probably move close to 1/8" after it hits its natural bottom. This is while pressing on it relatively hard. The left side around the S has slightly less than half that much flex.

By comparison, the L702x has virtually no flex with the same pressure. I do have the backlit keyboard.

Still have the slightest bit of flex around that area alright but its nothing compared to what it was, I was getting flex almost everywhere I typed...

I was not happy with it as I was compairing it to my old inspiron but im happy now after getting it replaced....

The engineer said the wire strip under the keybord was causing the flex but looking at the 2 boards side by side the old 1 looked a bit warped compared to the new 1 imo...

I have th backlit keyboard; no flex at all unless I actually try and flex it.
