I have a vague idea that it has something to do with my ATI drivers?

I get the message right after I log in. I can access my desktop and the Internet, but the taskbar with the programs at the top is missing.

When I go to Explorer, my laptop also can't find any of my libraries (documents, pictures, etc.).

Anyone else has experienced a similar problem? It happened yesterday...

Did you update your ATI Drivers? a similar thing happened to me when I did that. I fixed it by using driver sweeper and re-installing them.

Thanks for a quick reply! No I don't believe I updated anything. Where can I get a driver sweeper? I can probably get a new ATI driver from Dell?

    Thanks fluffy!

I couldn't download anything using my laptop yesterday. That Catalyst thing has messed up everything. I just did it on another computer, and I'll try to install the new drivers tonight. I hope it works!

Well, now the installer refuses to work, so I can't install either the driver sweeper or the latest ATI drivers.

The only thing I seem to be able to access now is the Internet.

I also tried to use the CD from Dell labeled Drivers, which came with my new laptop, but it's too cryptic - I don't know which one is ATI :( Jeez, how difficult is it to put files in properly labeled folders, Dell?

I guess I'll just have to call support tomorrow...

Hey fluffy, I tried to do the Reputation thingie for you, and it didn't add anything. Does it take them a while to update it? Nothing seems to be working for me this week. I somehow managed to upset the IT gods!

All righty, thanks! I hope they can help me. A spare mouse would be nice too :)

I've only had this lappy for a month, and so far I've been enjoying it (except for the right speaker rattling issue, and now this  )

So, just an update - the Dell support people suggested restoring my computer's settings to the date before the Catalyst problem happened.

This solved the issue for now - I got all my Libraries back, and the Windows 7 taskbar is working again. I still don't know what caused the problem in the first place though.

After we restored the system, I wanted to upgrade the drivers. We had to reboot in Safe Mode to download the ATI drivers, and use Internet Explorer. My Firefox was downloading (we tried a few times), but only Dell's download manager, rather than the actual files. The support people admitted that the download manager was buggy, especially in Firefox.

In addition, I also upgraded my BIOS to the latest 06 version (I had 01 before).

Anyways, I hope this is the end of this problem. Now I'll have to deal with my rattling speaker next week. It was 2 in the morning when we were done messing with my laptop, so I was too tired to bring the speaker issue up!

I think it's actually pretty cool that their support is available literally 24 hours a day, I only had to wait a few seconds to get connected.

On another note, that stupid Lollipop song has to go! It's annoying.

You can get the latest driver for your Radeon from http://strags.com/ (it's a Dell release).

Great, thanks! I believe that's the one we finally downloaded yesterday from Dell (8.683.2.0000), but I'll definitely double check tonight.

OK, another interesting conversation bit from yesterday's support session.

I have 4 GBs of memory. They told me they could upgrade me to an extra 2 GB for $49 ("Your laptop will be really fast then!) I was like, sure, let's do it. It's a good thing that even at 2:00 AM I was pretty alert and suspicious, and finally I realized they wanted to sell me a 2 GB stick, rather than upgrade me to 6 GB total. What in the world am I supposed to do with a 2 GB stick??? Keep it as a spare? I already have 2 x 2 GB sticks in my machine!

I think they really should know a little more about the stuff they are trying to sell!
