Hi guys - been a lurker for a while, thought I'd ask for some help of my own!
The other day when working next to my friend with a studio 15 I noticed that his screen was much brighter and the whites were more 'brilliant'
I took some photos of this and contacted Dell and they sent an engineer out to replace the screen today.
However the replacement screen was no better:
The engineers response was "that's probably just how the screen is"
I was unconvinced however - after reading how many users on this forum find the highest brightness 'too bright' (how could the photos above be too bright?) and asked to pursue it further -
Dell will call me back tomorrow to try and move the situation forward.
The question I want to ask you guys is, am I actually experiencing an issue or just being fussy (or haven't calibrated the screen properly?).
I don't know anyone else with an XPS 16 so have no reference point and looking at videos online of other XPS's obviously won't help as there is a mixture of different lighting conditions that could be affecting the recording.
If this is a genuine problem what do you think could be wrong? Two defective screens in a row? GPU problem? Screen connection?
Appreciate any help!

That really is bad. It's very red. I have the 1645 and it looks "great" like that studio 15.
You can try to reset the color profile, or try some of the ones here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...color-profile-xps-1640-5-7-wled-monitors.html -
Mine has more of a subdued blue hue. Using the color profile thread posted above helped some.

My screen is the RGBLED (Hardware ID: SEC5448) so I have tried the colour profiles in the relevant thread for them. All of those make my screen appear very dark making me think even more the backlight isn't bright enough.
Using a program named QuickGamma and increasing the gamma up to full (3.10) I can get a brighter whites but it appears very digital and screen items look washed out. -
you could try adjusting the color temperature..
do it like this.. go to CCC->My Built In Displays->Display Color. then try to change the color temperature. default is 6500K..
try this and tell..
the studio 15 display appears bluish to me instead of white.. (can anybody confirm this or is it just me) -
One thing to note is that the screen on the right, while looking great, doesn't necessarily mean that it's 'right'. (which means that the screen on the left is not necessarily 'wrong'. It's hard to make a judgement with a screen photographed and then displayed on on screens.)
New LCDs are necessarily 'bluer' to make them look nice. A device like the i1DisplayLT can really help to get the best colours and provide some 'objectivity'... -
What version are you running? -
mine is 11.4. see the attatched pic below.. did he replace just the 'display inside' or the 'whole lid' ?
BUT.. I can't stop wondering what are you doing with AMD FirePro graphics drivers ... i mean how did you get to install them i the first place.. the only GPUs ever used in the SXPS line were 3650/4650/5730 and none of them supproted professional graphics...
install the normal Catalyst drivers, most recent is 11.5, see if it makes any change..
pardon me if i'm ignorant of some AMD/ATI driver usages..Attached Files:
