So I'm trying to get this straight...in regards to the current 1645 and 1647.

Dell (at least Dell USA) used to offer the famous 16" RGBLED screen at FHD.

Currently in the USA they no longer offer the 16" RGBLED screen (unless you find one in the Outlet), but still offer two 15.6" WLED screens at 1600x900 and 1920x1080 respectively.

All of these screens are described as "Edge to Edge" on Dell USA's website. Does that just refer to the "glass" (plastic) extending over the bezel to the edge of the case?

I wanted to see the size difference between the 16" RGBLED screen and the 15.6 WLED FHD screen, so I found a review on youtube that claims an RGBLED screen and another that claims 15.6" WLED FHD.

here's the review of the 16" RGBLED: YouTube - Dell Studio XPS 16 Review Part One

here's the review of the 15.6" WLED FHD: YouTube - Dell 1647 Unboxing

I don't see any size difference between these screens. Is it just that I can't tell the .4" difference over youtube?

I just went from a RGBLED to a WLED 1080. I can tell the difference! I know some people say its no noticeable but it is for me. Is it a deal breaker? No! Is it a horrible downgrade? NO Was it worth it to go from P8700 to i7 720, Blur Ray and faster ram? Sure.

This is correct. If you ask me, E2E is more of a marketing line than anything of substance...

To me, the 15.6" display does look a bit smaller - it seems like there's a bit more black space around it - but I could just be looking for a difference where there isn't one. Interesting that they changed the screens like this, though.

It could just be that the older "16 inch" display was also a 15.6" display marketed as a "16 inch" part? Has anyone actually measured the screen diagonal on one of these?

Yes there is a difference. If you search through old postings, you will see some screen comparisons that show exactly what the differences are.

I mean, I know there are quality differences and actual technical differences, but is there really a size difference? The RGBLED is/was really a full 16 inch screen?

The 16 inch screen is indeed bigger than the 15.6 inch screen. Someone posted a picture comparison on these forums answering this same question.

It's such a shame they don't offer full 16" versions anymore, ironically for the XPS -16-. I don't understand the reasons why. Anyone have speculations?

It's either availability or other technical reasons (draws too much power, ect.)

Either way that would be lame if they started calling it the "XPS 15 point 6" and I don't expect this to happen.

I think 16:9 15.6 inch screen is already became the new standard for replacing the 16:10 15.4 inch screen. OEM LCD suppliers also don’t want to waste their production line to produce 16 inch screen due to low demand.

If Dell don’t offer 16 inch anymore, they should already redesign SXPS 16 chassis to make it smaller to fit 15.6 inch screen. Smaller and lighter SXPS 16 will be great. I don’t understand why they still continue using the old SXPS 16 chassis until now.

Same reason they took so long to partially address the throttling issues, they didn't want to spend the money...
