Sorry to make a new thread for this, but I was hoping I'd have a better chance to get an answer than in the XPS 15z mega-thread.
So I ordered a refurbished 15z from the outlet (i5, 1080p screen, 525m, etc.), and it's in great condition physically, but I have some concerns about how it's running. From the minute I turned it on the fan has been running and it doesn't shut off. Not even when I'm just idling at the desktop with nothing open. Although it's not VERY loud, the fans are definitely audible from 6-10 feet away from the laptop. Just wanted to check to see if this is just how the 15z normally runs, or if I should have a dell technician come check it out.
Another minor concern - whenever I right click on the desktop (not in other programs, however) there is an audible "chirping" noise that comes from inside the machine. Not sure if this is coming from the HDD, the video card, mobo, or whatever, but it's definitely worrying me.
Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated

Can I ask you how much you bought this laptop from outlet? Are you from US or UK? I mean where did you buy it from, dell outlet US or UK.
-
bought it from the US dell outlet for $825 all in. However, the service tag was tied to a canadian user, so originally the laptop was sent to someone in canada.

I have the zed and my fan is def not on all the time. What do you have set in the windows power options for cooling ? Active or passive ? As for other chirping noises, nope, mine is completely silent.

I called Dell and a technician is coming to replace the heatsink/fan so maybe that will work.. but the "chirping" noise is bothering me. It is coming from inside the machine whenever I right click on the desktop.. what part could this possibly be? -
out of curiosity, what BIOS are you guys running? the dell technician just came and replaced the fan/heatsink but it didn't fix anything. I might have to have this motherboard replaced... or maybe i'll just return it, i don't know

I had a Dell technician at my place this week replacing the screen on the XPS 15z. To do that I noticed that he did not remove old thermal paste on the CPU and the GPU before putting the heatsink back(this removal was a neccessary step to remove the screen).
I also am very annoyed at the fan and I am thinking of cleaning the heatsink myself and then reapply high-quality thermal paste.
Also, the technician said that the fan on the XPS 15z is a standard laptop fan - so there might be super-silent fans out there on Ebay maybe.
I have replaced my HDD to a SSD disk - this definitely made my XPS 15z more silent and cooler. I also tried to control the fan with the software SpeedFan, but it didn't work.
I have upgraded to the latest BIOS, but there are almost no options there - not like good ASUS motherboard BIOS's where you have a lot of fan options. -
Hi there,
have you sorted it out some how?
i have the same problem... -
I swap for a SSD and when 1% CPU busy, there is silence.
When it really work hard, that is when I hear the roaring fan. -
Alright and I have another problem with the fan...
Whenever it turns off (reaches 0 RPMs) after couple of seconds I've got very strange noise, like if some metal would hit another metal (to be more specific it sounds like farting - seriously)...
First time it happened after few days of using computer when technician changed the cooling system because the fan was constantly on (got it refurbished & 1st fan I had was never calming down - that's why I called them to change it)...
In the meantime I had some other problems with the XPS 15z (system freezes) so they changed my motherboard...
After I called and request the new cooling system as the 2nd one seemed to got broken (same issue as now = strange noise) they replaced it for me and after 3(ish) days I got the same problem again (on my 3rd cooling system, the current one I have)... strange "farting" noise every time fan goes from "any>1"RPMs to 0RPMs state...
What should I do? Of course I can call Dell and request another replace of fan and heat-sinks but what causes this issue... :|
I would also risk to say that the noise gets louder and louder every day...
Could I be just unlucky getting 3rd faulty cooling system in row? Or maybe there is something different that is the problem here... I checked when the technician was changing the fan - there is nothing that fan's "wings" could possibly be in contact with... neither in the "new" one he was putting nor on the "old" one...
looking forward your suggestions and tips... -
Might remove it again and put some thin pads between the chassis and fan, I notice that is nothing. I think when screw down the two holding screws it presses the fan and the wires go inside of it a bit.
