I configured the laptops like this:

    HP Envy:
    -i7 quad core 2670QM
    -8 GB 1333 Mhz RAM
    -750 GB 7200RPM SATA
    -AMD Radeon HD7690M (6770M equivalent)

    Dell XPS:
-i5 dual core 2430M (worse than HP Envy)
-8 GB 1333 Mhz RAM (same as HP Envy)
-750 GB 7200RPM SATA (same as HP Envy)
-GeForce GT525M graphics (a LOT worse than 7690M)

The funniest thing is that the Dell came out to $1,299 and the HP to $1,189 (using coupon code NBT3886). Since HP almost always has a coupon code and 20-30 seconds of Googling will usually find that, saying that not everyone knows about the coupon code is not an excuse.

Couple that with the fact that HP gives a 2-year warranty over Dell's 1-year warranty and according to recent statistics HP is better in terms of reliability.

Does this mean that anybody who buys an XPS 15z now deserves to be called a maniac, or am I missing something here?

Its thicker than the 15z by about 4mm, so it is somewhere between it and the XPS15. Otherwise, there are multiple questions:
    - How is the screen? The XPS15 has a FHD screen which is legendary.
    - How is the cooling? Both the 15z and the XPS15 are pretty cool, and you can really use the CPU and the GPU to their limit...most thin 15" notebooks have problems with this.

The other thing is how has your six months been. Nobody should be called a maniac for getting anything how would they know the envy was coming

HP has the worst support of the major brands, and reliability of their laptops has not been good. (Source, unbiased info from Consumer Reports.)

base consumer models I will agree, their business units seem to be best bar none. no idea on envy's they are supposed to be decent.

as for screen it looks like an acceptable IPS panel is available, bad color gamut, great angles

Consumer Reports aggregates data from all models for each manufacturer. HP has been the worst or close to the worst for many years, so fairly consistently bad.

I clearly said now. I didn't mean people who bought it before the Envy was released. And what do you mean by "how has your six months been?"

By this logic, shouldn't you be feeling regretful that the Envy 15 has the same specs as your MacBook Pro for $1000 less? And I'm not trying to knock the MBP, it is the best laptop on the market in my opinion, though I do think it is hard to justify the $1000 price premium even with the superior battery, touchpad, and build quality.

Let's not bring Macs into the discussion. I was seriously considering the Envy but have had horror stories with HP laptops before. My HDX died on me after 2 years with a broken hard drive and flickering screen; bought for $1500 and sold for $64 in 2 years. Besides, that HP is just a copy of the MacBook Pro. It's like a slightly more powerful runner-up. I don't like the idea of that. Oh, and, also, I like OS X. But the main reason is that Apple is the #1 company in terms of reliability, while HP and Dell are both in the bottom half (according to my chart). And also because of the reasons you listed - superior battery and touchpad - and the unibody is very sturdy. Not only that, but I prefer 1680x1050 to 1920x1080. It's easier on my eyes, and I get much better performance in games. It's kind of like the ideal resolution (for a 15 inch screen). Apple also has far superior support to both Dell and HP. And also I like showing off. Everybody - even people who don't know what a processor is - knows that a Mac is a good computer. I think all those reasons justify the $1000 premium.

But you have to pay separately for it. Most computer companies could provide better support if their customers were willing to both pay more for their computers and pay separately for support.

Let's keep it on topic or this will turn into a thread lock.

Specs these days are specs. People will buy Dell cause they like Dell. Some people will buy Acer. Some people may like the XPS look over the Envy.

    My Dell has:

    -i7 quad core 2670QM
    -8 GB 1333 Mhz RAM
    -1000 GB 7200RPM SATA
    -Nvidia 555m 3GB RAM
    + 1080p display!
+JBL speakers, which sound way better than my buddy's Beats Audio on his Envy. He hates his speakers compared to mine.

What is the res of the screen in your config?

Except that the 2011 MBP's overheat like Fukushima reactors. Read up on Mac's forums. People have tried all kinds of things to cool them down. I found the best way to deal with mine was to sell it and replace it with an XPS.

The XPS is fatter and uglier, but that thickness allows for better ventilation. Also the MBP is solid aluminum, which means the whole thing is basically a heat sink. If you care anything about having defective sperm cells, avoid heating your balls.

Interesting how people constantly shun the MacBook Pro for getting hot. I don't know, my 15" MacBook Pro never goes above 120 F under normal operation - with the fans off (well, silent - at 2000 RPM making no noise whatsoever). And, when I switch to dedicated graphics and start playing games, the fans go on maximum (6200 RPM) and the computer never goes above 160 F - playing Dirt 2 at high-ultra settings. I don't know, if you people consider 160 F as hot under heavy load... the palm rests on it are always cold. They never heat up. The only thing that ever heats up is the bottom of the laptop in the top left corner - where the GPU is. So no defective sperm cells here.

Oops, I forgot to post the screens. It is 1920x1080 for both of them. But the coupon NBT3886 has expired already so don't try. No worries, HP will have another one soon.

I cant say anything on gaming but my last 3 15" and 5 17"'s would all throttle or hit thermal shutdown ( or in one case slag the CPU and mainboard ) doing large video or CAD renders. 95+c was/is very common for me and a bunch of us over at creativecow.com

Then I guess the only explanation is that you all have defective MacBook Pros?? Or maybe I have a defective MacBook Pro that's not supposed to stay this cool?

Call me a maniac!!! My XPS 15z battery can last about 8 hours...what about yours? Mine is thinner with a graphics card that is just as good as yours and I have Samsung 256GB SSD....so the performance will be just as good as any i7 and my battery lasts longer than your new HP Envy. Plus my XPS 15 is thinner and lighter....so sounds like a win win for me! :)
oh...and the reason HP has so many coupons is they would not sell any laptops unless they gave price reductions. They are not making any money selling computers...they even tried to sell their whole PC division....but no takers!

Well, first of all, I don't have an Envy. I have a MacBook Pro. Look in my signature. Second, HP says the battery in the new Envy 15 will last 9 hours. I don't know how true that is, though...

I think the real question is how long will these batteries continue to provide decent battery life. The battery that came in my mid-2008 XPS M1530 lasted for 4.5 hours brand new, but after about 2 years went down to lasting only 30 minutes. To be fair I probably charged it on average of once every 2 days. Still, I would hope that the batteries used in all these laptops (the 15z, Envy 15, and MBP) will continue to perform well past a couple of years.

So then you were just trolling? Trying to start something up? You don't have either laptop Dell or HP? Well i actually have a XPS 15z AND a MBA see my sig. I know from first hand experience that my 15z will get 8 hours of battery life. I used to have an HP Envy 14 last year. HP said it would get 6 hours of battery life.....BUT it really got more like 3-4 hours battery life.
