    1 week old.

    Now refusing to boot.

"interesting" clicking noise coming from the HDD (Samsung 500gb).

    One. Week. Old.

Lohl, just get it replaced :)

I know "Just get it", sometimes does not cut it, I mean, I got my motherboard replaced 3 times, even raised a supervisor level problem, so, I feel ya...

In a way, it was alike, but, thankfully these problems can be solved by a simple phone call thats free... so, just phone and be happeh.

its my business laptop. i specified a large drive precisely because I wanted something to put a lot of data onto - which I have done over the past 7 days. Including a VMServer setup, several VMs, several licenses installed etc.etc.

so no, "just get it" really doesn't cut it. Certainly not on a ONE week old laptop.

wow will, thats really bad, 1 week huh...

well , Ben has given you the solution, whining here isnt gonna make you feel better, nor is it gonna fix your laptop, give dell a call and be polite about it, they should be able to change your laptop for a completely new one if it was a week old. it might not even be your Hard Drive... you can swap it when you get the replacement.

    i wish you luck :D

Ask for the WD Scorpio 500gb drive. Sorry to hear about your dilemma.

Was the drive subjected to any heavy shock or vibration?

If not, then it must have been defective which inevitably happens.

I know I have a warranty. I know how to contact Dell. I know they are going to honour the warranty. In fact, they've already visited my business and fixed it (today).

I would have thought that you would glean from my original post that all this is largely superfluous to my point.

My 1-wk old laptop died. Not exactly inspiring for any new owner. Certainly doesn't make we want to be "polite about it" with Dell either. Perhaps they should look to review their QA procedures - it would seem I'm certainly not the only one to experience issues that really shouldn't be happening.

You are correct, it shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does. Mechanical things break and it stinks when they do, especially when they are brand new. The true reflection of a company is not if something breaks but how it is handled. Seems to me that Dell handled this exactly as they should have and much better than most companies. IMO your post validates the CS at Dell and their desire to please the customer.

I recently purchased a new computer that has sound problems. The company wants me to send it in for repairs that will take 2 to 3 weeks. They will not replace it or send a tech to repair it. You are fortunate that you bought from a company that values the customer.

If you are hearing clicking from teh hard drive, then that is the drive arm slamming against the motor. New drive and call it a day.
