I purchased a XPS 1530 2 weeks ago and my Alps touchpad mouse keeps freezing for 5 to 10 seconds.
But if I keep moving my finger around on the touchpad when the mouse/pointer freezes the mouse will continue to remain frozen, or partially move in little spurts, until I take my finger off the touch pad.

The freezing occurs maybe everything 15 minutes or so.

    I have called Dell twice.
Downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the Chipset, video, Bios, and Alps touchpad.

I have read other XPS owners have had similar problems but I have never seen anyone post a fix.

Anyone know of a fix for this freezing?

I have owned 4 other Inspiron Dell laptops and have never had this problem before.

I am still in my 21 day warranty return window and I will likely return my computer if I can't find a fix.

Done a clean install yet? I feel like a lot of the factory installations are utter junk these days. Most likely if a clean install doesn't fix it, it's more than a software problem, and you should most probably return the machine. On the other hand, these ALPS touchpads don't seem to be that great in general... it might be "normal"...

Yes, just finished a clean install a few hours ago.

The mouse driver that was installed from the CD was an older version 6.0.6001.18000 June 21 2006. This older version does not have the GUI that allows me to disable the Tap touch. The default settings on these Alps drivers have the Tap touch feature enabled. I really dislike the Tap feature and need a driver that will allow me to disable the Tap.

After the clean install I downloaded Dells latest driver 7.1.102.7, which has the GUI to disable Tap.

Unfortunately, reinstalling the latest driver 7.1.102 made my mouse pointer even worse than before the clean install. The mouse response was sticking/stalling several times a minute. IMO the Alps GUI on 7.1.102 is causing most of the problems. I have since rolled back the Alps driver back to 6.0.6001, which does not have a GUI and ability to disable the Tap feature.

While the freezing/stalling is much less with 6.0.6001, it still occurs often enough to be a real annoyance.

I don't see any other alternative but to return my system and ask for a new replacement. Hopefully the replacement system won't have this problem.
