When I turn on my XPS everything looks and sounds normal for the first 2 seconds, then the power light shuts off and so does the everything else except the hard drive, and the laptop seems to shut down. Then a few seconds later it starts spinning the optical drive, for a bit and then seems to hang with the hard drive spinning.

The whole time nothing comes up on the screen.

Any suggestions on how start debugging this? I was told the laptop shut down normally and did this the next time it was turned on.

    Quick update.

I started pulling stuff out and eventually got it to turn on, but I noticed that one of the mounts holding the heat sink on the GPU had broken off.. So I'm guessing this is the cause of my problems.

Any suggestions? This situation is looking increasingly grim.
