    XPS 15 with TV tuner?

My XPS 15 died in less than a day of use and I requested a system exchange from Dell. They are sending me a new XPS 15, but the "exchange" build makes no mention of a TV tuner.

Aside from the motherboard frying, the TV tuner port ripped out of its socket on the first XPS 15. So when this exchange system arrives, I'm not exactly sure how I would confirm if there is a TV tuner or not.

Can any XPS 15 owners show me a working TV tuner port, and also what it shows up as in device manager?

Yea, your new exchange machine definitely does not have a TV tuner. They forgot to add it.

I do. I didn't configure it when I bought the machine but added it later. It costs me around £50 in UK.

Just an update. They are sending a tech over to install the TV tuner in my laptop.

Over the phone, I asked them for compensation on the basis that my first order was DOA and this one came without the correct parts.

    I was offered:
    external Harddrive

    I asked for:
    blu-ray player
    ram
    9-cell battery
    backlit keyboard
    printer

Out of the things I asked for, only Ram (up to 4 gb upgrade) and 9-cell battery was approved. I opted for the 9-cell battery. Since battery issues will probably come up in the future.

I actually want to repaste and install an SSD in this laptop. It's probably not smart to ask the tech to do it himself, but I'm hoping that he'd teach me how to dissemble the laptop properly if I offer him something to drink.

Its really easy to take this laptop apart. I saw the tech do it. So don't worry :) In fact, I got the tech's number in my area in case I need it later.

I missed adding the TV tuner in my order. So it can be added after I get it?

I have also missed the tuner off my order and dont really want to cancel it as its nearly built. Does anyone know if you can buy it separately and install yourself? I have looked all over the Dell sales page and cannot find it.
    Cheers

The way I see it, the new XPS15 (L502x) doesn't offer a TV tuner anymore. At least I wasn't able to configure one with TV tuner here in Europe.

It was available as an option for me in the UK aswell but dismissed it at first. Did you manage to order one after getting your laptop? and does anyone know if it is retro fittable with the internal antenna?

It is possible to buy from DELL and add it later but costs more. It requires 4 parts including the card to get it working propery as it done in factory. Some parts are more expensive than the card e.x. back plate.

See sig. Because I started out with the highest base configuration ($1299), the only graphics options were the GT 540M with or without the tv tuner. It was an extra $50 option.

Can anyone add something to this? Why is it garbage, heat, compatibility or doesn't it pick up stations? (I assume it can get digital HD signals?) I was thinking about putting it on my soon to be ordered XPS 15 but don't really need it. I just had thoughts about using it to watch TV at the office if it works decent.

Are you sure you can purchase it afterwards? I have gone through all the tvtuners on the Dell website and cannot find it. Also is it just the card, Atenna and a couple of leads or has it got some internal componants as some people have mentioned a different case to house the tuner?
    Thanks again

Theroretically, it shouldn't pick up any HD digital channels that are encrypted, even though it will probably pick up a couple of them. There should also be standard definition digital channels that are encrypted, like your premium movie channels, that will be encrypted and you should not be able to see them. I've honestly never worked with a laptop or computer and tv tuner, I mainly bought for "what if" scenarios. I did just work for a cable/phone/ISP provider and know what we do on our end to keep you from accessing premium/HD channels.

I was wondering about picking up OTA HD channels broadcast by our local affiliates, NBC, Fox, CBS, PBS, ABC etc... or does the tuner need a cable / sat service to work?

    Thanks

If the tv tuner works anything like a standard tv tuner does, you should have no problems picking up all the OTA channels, as they are not encrypted.

    To clear the confussion.

It does pick up most of the free channels here in England. I get around 100 channels. No HD channels, just the SD.

But in weak signal area you do need to plug in your wall ariel RF cable into the socket at the back of the laptop.

For those thinking of adding it later,

There is no internal connection or wiring to the Tuner card to ariel. So you need to buy a TV Ariel connector from DELL. You need an Engineer visit to fit this as you have to take out almost everything in the laptop. Top cover, keyboard, bottom cover .... The service manul details this but it is quite a lot of work and you may risk your warranty without engineer visit.

But I must say that the quality of the TV receiption is very good like watching DVD on some channels.

    Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me which software is used to watch tv using the tuner and which drivers are used. I've replaced my HDD with an SSD(clean install) and need to reinstall the program and driver but not sure which ones they are.
    Thanks.
