It seems to take ages to recognize I have placed two fingers on the track pad..and then scrolling only seems to work 50% of the time.
    Am I missing something here?
All drivers should come pre-installed yes?
The only think Ive done since turning this machine on is flash the bios - per instructions leaflet from dell (think I just flashed it with the same bios that was already there).

You probably just need to adjust your touchpad sensitivity in the Synaptics software. I've got my touchpad settings good enough to where I only use a mouse for gaming now.

Na, it does suck. If you've ever touched an Apple glass trackpad then nothing (short of Emma Watson's back) will ever be smooth again. The Dell trackpads are good, for a PC. But they are nowhere near as good as Apple. That's the "you get what you pay for" thing. :\

Dell's multitouch is not very good. It picks up ghost touches, and also ignores actual touches. Trying to move my mouse around and accidentally zooming in or out got so irritating that I disabled the zoom gesture.

I've found that I have to put my two fingers more than an inch apart and up at the very top middle of the trackpad before I scroll down in order to get it to work properly. Also, if you do it a lot on the same page very quickly, sometimes it won't recognize very well. I usually just click once off to the side of the main div on the page and then it will pick up scrolls better again.

I really dislike the two finger scroll as well. I opted to download the latest generic drivers from the synaptics website:

    Drivers | Synaptics

Chiral scrolling works great and reminds me of scroll wheel ipods.

I agree. This trackpad is a complete piece of sh*t. I have a 5-year old EEE 901 that I bought for ~$400 new, and the pad on that is miles ahead; it's not just that Apple tech is good. This pad is disgracefully bad.

My finger gestures are just fine with my 15z, worked 100% of the time although I don't use it..I have the cypress trackpad software and you can just turn on the side scrolling on the right side of the trackpad instead.

Even though the multi gestures work smoothly I don't like using it because it's wierd scrolling down long pages...after I scrolled down as much as my finger could the natural thing to do is lift your finger up to the top then slide down again. The only thing is that the page goes back to its original spot to the top instead of scrolling down more.

You can disable 2 finger scrolling and use 1 finger scrolling like normal. I have both options enabled on my XPS 15.

Right click on the touchpad icon in the task bar and click pointing device properties>>>Click Device Settings>>> Click Settings>>>Click "Send Auron a million dollars" (optional, but recommended)>>>Expand "Scrolling"

Try the drivers that come straight from synaptics. They are usually a lot more up to date.

I jsut got this laptop and the touchpad is one of the worst ever made.

good luck scrolling in chrome using the scroll region or the 2 finger scroll.

the engineering was so poor it cant even detect scroll movement. In essence they built a computer around a failed device that was not designed for laptop use. Clearly it was designed to be garabage or for low end systems so I do not know why such a low quality part would be included in an xps. then again it is dell.

I have absolutely no problems using the touchpad. You do have to make sure your two fingers are in line towards the screen, then slide them forward or backward. I like it better than the new MBP I had for a couple of weeks. I haven't updated any software for the touchpad either.

:D I must've missed the "Send Auron a million dollars" option.

I DO like the touchpad on my SXPS much better (smooth as glass), but even so, using the touchpad on the XPS is second nature now. I don't do any two finger scrolling, though, since the one finger scrolling works so well.

I don't have my laptops handy right now but I guess I must've adjusted a setting or something because mine doesn't return to the top.

    EVERYONE DOWNLOAD THIS NOW.

I thought this was a replacement driver. It is a simple application. I disabled Synaptic/Dell two finger scrolling first then ran the exe. Now two finger scrolling is a dream.

It is difficult to believe that Dell engineers got completely wrecked by a single developer.

    EVERYONE DOWNLOAD THIS NOW.

    This is magic.

It's the weirdest thing, I went the lazy way when I got my XPS 14, I just took the SSD out of my Studio XPS 13 and put it in my new machine (I was going to reformat, but it booted and worked). The older Synaptics drivers I manged to get working with two finger scrolling (using synaptics scrybe) on the XPS 13 tracked sooo much better then the latest Synaptics drivers I was using on the original spinny hard drive in the 14. When it comes time for a real reformat and reinstall if I can't find those old drivers I'll have to look into the TwoFingerScroll thingy.

I figured out, that the Driver provided by Dell with my XPS L502x is way better then the "original" Synaptics Driver that can be downloaded from their HP. Scrolling works very good(not excellent though). I have the option for one finger scrolling with circle movement enabled too(dunno the correct description, im german :)) and that works very well too.

I haven't found a pc yet that has legit multi touch. Everything Ive had blows and I never use it. My wife's macbook pro, utterly perfect.
