I know that this area may be full of biased opinions considering this is an XPS forum, but I am going to ask my question anyway. I am coming up on the end of the 30 day return policy on my L502X, but there is and was a small part of me that wanted to buy an M14X. When I compared the specs and cost savings I ended up going with the more budget friendly XPS. I am just wondering if anyone has compared them both in person and what their thoughts on them were. I use my XPS for general use some video watching and gaming. The games I play are not the most demanding ones being WOW, MW3 and D3 when it finally comes out, so I am not sure whether I would notice the benefits of the GT 555M or not. The one thing that I am most concerned with on the M14X is the screen as the one on this XPS is by far the best that I have ever seen.

Here are the specs of the one I bought @ a cost of $1045.69 before taxes CDN
    XPS 15 L502X i7-2760QM | 8GB RAM | 750GB HDD| 2GB Nvidia GT540M | Bluray drive | 15.6" B+RGLED 1080p | 6 Cell | Backlit Keyboard

    Thanks

The only reason you may want the m14X is for the GT555M which is a lot more powerful than the GT540M, I can say for MW3 you will notice a difference if you play with shadows on etc. If you don't worry about GPU performance that much , stay with the XPS 15. I wish the XPS 15 had better GPU, then it'll be the perfect laptop.

The m14x has a nice keyboard... its not the chicklet style you see on every laptop nowadays. I really like the alienware style of backlighting.

That said, besides the gpu, I would say the xps 15 is a better bang for the buck

I'm playing MW3 at 1920X1080 all settings maxed out on ultimate and averaging around 30 fps, sometimes dipping into the low 20's but the game looks amazing...especially on the level where you leave the submarine and drive the boat. I do agree though it would be an amazing machine with a better GPU

When playing MW3 I have everything at high and AA at 2x using 1080p res and I average around 42fps with dips as low as 30fps in heavy fire fights. Has anyone compared the screens of the XPS 15 1080p version vs the 900p from the M14X in person? I have done a lot of you tube searching and am having troubles finding anything.

I'm paraphrasing here, but the consensus is the screen on the M14 isn't a patch on the l502x 1080p panel, so of that's important to you, stick with what you have.

One thing to consider is this: even the GT555 on the m14 will eventually become obsolete as newer more demanding games come out. But the 1080p panel in the l502x will be just as good in the years to come as it is today.

The gt555 is much better than the 540m, but you have that gorgeous 1080p screen. I'd stick with what you bought

You will give up many sweet things beside gpu if you switch to m14x. For the screen, there should be no comparison between the two; xps 15's got the 95% color gamut and m14x is 45%. The sound is clearly the winner on xps side. M14x does look really awesome from the outside and it certainly attracts more attention then xps 15. Also the build quality and cooling system on any alienware are definitely top-notch.

I am going to stick with my XPS. The screen is just too nice to give up I have looked at some other laptops and there is no comparison.

How does the XPS 17's 1080p screen look next to the 15?

    Thanks

The XPS 17 screen is unfortunately not as good. The 1080p screen is a matte screen with much graininess. See the L702x thread to see various people's complaints about it. It is not as good as the 1080p screen on the L502x.

Both of them have 1080p but their color production is a great difference. xps15 looks deeper with more vibrant on its display than the xps17. As the spec goes, the xps17 has only 72%; very standard for most 1080p display out there.
