I was thinking to swap out the 250GB SK Hynix PC401 NVME SSD that came with my XPS 15 9570 FHD as I'd like a bigger SSD.

I thought about putting in a 1TB SSD, but the Samsung 960 nvme is around $520 CAD and a bit out of my budget.

I can however get a WD Blue 1TB SSD for half that, but it's not an nvme.

I've read that the nvme drives are 5x faster, but not sure if this applies to read/write speeds of the SK Hynix as well.

I will use the laptop for general stuff (writing, browsing) as well as editing (HD and some 4k using Davinci Resolve).

Am I going to regret swapping out the faster drive in day to day use? I'm coming from an 2011 MBP so anything feels zippy next to that.

    THanks!

I can't say for the 9570 as I don't own that machine. However, when I built my last desktop I went with an NVMe drive at first. Ended up returning it because I didn't like how hot it ran and picked up a regular SSD. Although speeds were definitely slower in benchmarks, real world use I never noticed a difference. I also don't transfer large files that often. But, for gaming, web browsing, booting, excel work, etc. I couldn't tell a difference. My desktop has a WD Blue 512 SSD as the boot drive (also keep music, videos on that drive) and WD Blue 1TB SSD as my game storage drive. Been very happy with their SSDs.

One thing to note, from all the teardowns I've seen, if you have the 97w battery in the 9570, there is no 2.5" SSD bay. You'd have to get the smaller battery and kit to add the 2.5". If you're just talking about m.2 sata, I personally wouldn't justify the cost for the Samsung NVMe. YMMV and again, don't own the 9570 so can't speak 100% for that machine.

Yeah I agree in that you likely won't notice a difference between NVMe and a good SATA m.2 drive. If you had to pick between a 1TB SATA m.2 and a 512GB NVMe I'd pick the SATA.

Thank you guys!! I'll go with the WD Blue 1 TB in that case.

I suppose I should keep the old 250GB NVMe in case of warranty issues, instead of trying to sell it used.

Yeah I'd keep the 250GB, it's not worth the hassle of selling it for cheap. You can return the laptop without a drive in it if you need, but sometimes Dell throws a fit about it.

Is there an option for multiple SSD/SSHD storage in 9570 that includes a 57Whr battery? I want to get the SSHD option with 8 gb RAM and FHD non-touch.

Is the SSD to be placed in the WWAN slot? If so what is the form-factor and what type of SSD should I get?

I guess I can also just replace the SSHD with a 2.5" SATA 3 SSD.

Yes, I had this in mine. The 9570 with the 57Whr comes with a 2.5" metal caddy thing - just unscrew it and add any 2.5" Hdd or SSD of your choice. You will also need 2 parts, 1 is a cable from the mobo to the drive and the others are little rubber grommets that go either side of the drive if its a thin one to sett better in the caddy.

Dell part numbers 3XYT5 for the grommets - you need 2 of these - (GRMT,HD,RBR,9550/5510)

and XDYGX - you need 1 of these, cable from mobo to sata interface on the drive. (CBL,HD,SATA 7MM,9550/5510)

Dell say they are for the 9550 but they work perfectly in the 9570. The cable just pushes in to the motherboard jumper with a firm 'click' and its an easy install.

If you lived local to me you could have mine, as I sent my 9570 back! I put a Samsung 860 Evo in and it worked well.

The SSD that comes with the machine is in an m.2 slot on the motherboard, and its a 2280 size, 22mm x 80mm with a single screw holding it in. Simple to swap out as well.

A Q I don't have the answer for. Is the 9570 M.2 slot set up for both Sata and NVME use? On my new desktop rig, one of the M.2 slots is and the other isn't.

Yes it works for both sata and nvme.
