    Hi all,

I have a problem in that I can't plug my external hard drive enclosure into the right USB port of the XPS 15 9550 without it causing all kinds of strange problems; like I think HD Sentinel was saying the SSD got disconnected, the Bluetooth radio restarts etc. It's weird and I'm not sure exactly what's going on, unless these random problems are all due to the SSD disconnecting and reconnecting. It seems to happen when there's a bit of writing going to the external drive. There's also a beeping sound that happens, and programs can freeze up.

I connected the external enclosure to the left USB port, and things seem ok so far.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I thought maybe it's an IRQ conflict.

    Thanks.

You probably have a bad USB enclosure. They are notorious for acting quirky... Such as not being recognized in certain situations, but working fine in others.

So far it's working fine in the left port though, and I had issues several times when it was in the right port, so to me it doesn't seem like the enclosure.

Also, would a bad enclosure make a bunch of other things in the computer act up?

    I think it's something else.

I spoke too soon. It took awhile, but I had the same issue with the enclosure plugged in the left port. The bluetooth radio reset or something again, and eMule showed erroneous downloads until I restarted it. I think I also heard 3 beeps. What is that code?

The right USB port is right besides the Wifi card. Guess what causes the erratic behavior? Proper shielding can bring it back.

I had the enclosure on the ground while plugged into the right USB port, but moved it onto the desk a few inches away from the right side of the laptop, since I needed to use the left port. Joseph, do you think I need to replace the cable? I'm using the cable from the box. The enclosure is an Icy Dock Black Vortex, with one 6TB HGST Deskstar NAS drive inside.

I left things going overnight, and surprisingly didn't have another issue, yet. Maybe it's because the eMule downloads have slowed down? I did write 69.1 GB from Crashplan Central to the external drive before this issue cropped up, although I think the eMule downloads were going pretty fast when I had the issue, so I'm not sure if it's download speed related.

This is a weird problem that I've never seen before. I'm checking the Event Viewer, and there are several entries that may be pertinent. Can somebody help me make sense of the entries?

There are two viable options for you.

1). Replace that USB cable with a shielded cable. Pray it works.

    Or
2). Learn to just live with that enclosure being plugged into left side

I shielded my Wifi card. After that, everything works fine with me. I cannot guarantee it will do the same with yours but worth a try.
