Do you think Dell will be doing an XPS 15 refresh this year, similar to the XPS 13 one they release in Jan (bigger screen)?

Well, the leaked XPS roadmap indicates a XPS15 refresh for April 2020.

    - Similar Skylake 14nm CPU from 2015 XPS 9550 (Comet Lake)

    - Same nVidia 1650 GPU

    - The code name changed to Fiorano (Berlinetta for 9570 & 7590). Additionally XPS 17 is slated for July 2020.

--> Not sure if Dell updates the XPS 15 chassis for 2020:

** The code name change from Berlinetta to Firoano hints at a change.

** But this is essentially unchanged CPU & GPU. I can't see Dell reworking the motherboard and chassis for this old CPU which gets replaced eventually ( unless Intel has indicated they are stuck at Skylake for several more years).

** And marketing might want to launch the updated style with the "surprise new" XPS17

** Maybe the XPS15 refresh receives the bottom screen chin reduction of the new XPS13 as suggested by @Schmoo2k . Screen looks awesome.

I am guessing that there will be an all new xps 15 this year, the 13 just got updated. I would say 10th gen processors, better graphics processing, 16:10 screen and maglev keyboard. New slimmer and lighter design as well. Pretty well a larger xps 13. The 15 and 13 2 in 1 correspond with each other now, so I am guessing dell will do the same with the non convertible versions.

The 15 2in1 disappears from that leaked roadmap at this point without replacement, maybe some sort of convergence?
Also the corresponding Intel-AMD CPU+GPU platform seems discontinued.

I don’t expect 16:10 screen - as I don’t believe there is any source for that in the OEM partner space. But I guess it’s possible Dell might be making an “arrangement” with a specific supplier. I recall they did the same thing when they intro’d the XPS line 4 years ago - they had a short term exclusivity deal on these “narrow bordered” displays for I think 1-2 years.

That would be really nice though!

I’ve also heard someone mention the “1650 Super with 6GB RAM”. And I perhaps they’ll do a triple pipe cooler with better thermals? I’ll be annoyed if it’s packing a 16:10 screen and the super - but I would still be waiting around 6-9 months to get them off refurb for a steal like I just did with my 7590 for $910!

More likely its packing none of that, the I/O selection is weakened, and the battery gets smaller.

You are betting they make the 15 smaller overall (I.e., 15” screen in a 13-14” body) and focus on a 17” variant that’s only marginally larger than the existing XPS15?

I'm putting my money on 16:10 since the industry is going that way, and for good reason.

The GPU situation seems bad since nobody knows which new 1650 mobile has the better TU116 core with the Turing encoder.

Is it the 1650 GDDR6? The 1650 Ti? The 1650 Super?

Might as well wait until the 2021 model with the rumored Tiger Lake-H, assuming Rocket Lake only ends up in cheaper machines or desktops.

Have their been any murmurs or updates about a tentative XPS15 release? As we all shifted to work at home, I am more in the need for a new laptop, and am REALLY trying to hold out for the 2020 XPS 15.

Hope everyone is staying safe and sane!

Maybe wait for ryzen 9 mobile laptops to get released and tested, they just might leave Intel 10 in smoke (initial reviews indicate a bit faster performance at substantially less power consumption, which is a biggie for the thin-and-light).

No, there is not. There is an amd powered surface and an Intel powered surface and the Intel version is much better. As I said. I will reserve judgement of the amd powered unit until it gets into the wild. Until then I will stick with the tried and true Intel.

You mean besides the tons of reviews that just came out about them in say the G14 and others? So far it looks like AMD is the clear winner in the mobile segment for the first time in a long time. I'd love to see an XPS with the 4000 series.

Jesus, I read that like even last week there was no timeline on release. Got any links for reviews? I’m not anti amd at all. I used to use them all the time but intel was the better of the two for a long time.

Tally ho tech backs into a few of the specs on the 2020 XPS. Good investigative work.

USB-C has been an excellent micro USB replacement on smartphones, and other devices, including wireless headphones, but I still don't like not having any USB A ports. Is the RAM going to be soldered, like the Alienware m15 R2?

Does the last question even need to be asked? :D Precedence was already set with the 9575, IMO. USB-C and soldered RAM. Smaller battery, too. I expect all three to be hallmarks of this new design.

If we are lucky, we may get to keep the charging jack, in addition to USB-C. But I know such hopes are delusional, especially since that image on page 2 lacks it. At least a SD card reader is still present (on the 17" model).

Now, the real question is, will the Killer WiFi garbage be soldered in? I think the answer there is yes.

Wait, since we already knew the answer to the last question, let's ask a real question: will there be an AMD chip at the center of this, or will there be 2015-era Intel heaters, masquerading as a mobile CPU in 2020?

AFAIK, it was a 6 month exclusivity on the "-HS" SKUs. Basically, top binned 35W chips.

Of course, with the current pandemic delaying everything, I guess the 6 month window means very little now.

The Tally-ho video at the bottom of the second page says that the WiFi will be integrated into the Intel platform this time around. So you probably can't change it, but at least it's not Killer, it's some WiFi 6 Intel chip.

I think it will remain. Just to bad for asus because they will miss out on sales because of having the chip first. Not a huge deal. AMD won't give asus more time on this one since it means less sales for AMD.

Edit: damn, now we need dell to put this into the 13 2 in 1 and I am sold!

WiFi has been "Integrated" into the platform since Coffee Lake, at least. It still requires a seperate RF front end (either in a standard 2230 card, or soldered in in a 1216 format). This was the difference between the 9260 (standard WiFi) and the 9560 ("integrated" wifi). Still separate cards. Same with the AX200 and the AX201, respectively.

The Killer "wifi" card, at least for the Intel-based cards, is just a regular Intel wifi card with a different device ID. Unfortunately, this different device ID is not (meaningfully) changeable through any known methods, and with Windows Update, will always force Killer's software stack onto you. Killer's "uninstaller" workaround still leaves an extra Killer driver and service to block the installation of this software stack. Most of the time it works.

To be fair to Killer, MSFT is the one being hyperagressive with forcing junk drivers down an user's throat, with absolutely no recourse (and yes, I have tried every policy and registry trick in the book - they flat out don't work anymore). However, Killer is still supplying MSFT with the tainted services, software, and drivers, like handling a known psychopathic serial killer a weapon - the result is obvious.

Dell and Lenovo have increasingly chosen to solder their WiFi cards into the board. Lenovo has frustratingly chosen to solder old WiFi cards onto their new computers (Thinkpad X1 Carbon - their flagship laptop that can easily blow past $2000 - soldered 9560 802.11ac... pathetic). Dell has chosen to solder Killer branded junk to their laptops.

So yes, even with "integrated WiFi," we can get stuck with Killer wifi. Case in point: the XPS13. Platform supports Integrated Intel WiFi. What do we get? Killer AX1650 soldered to the board.

Either way, I don't have to like it, and I don't have to buy it. The only credit I give Killer is they aggressively push Intel's latest networking solutions onto the market. They were faster than Intel with WiFi AX/6 (even with Intel as their supplier), and more aggressively pushing vendors to include WiFi AX/6. Same with Intel's 2.5GbE LAN chipset. Intel has been sitting on it for years, and Killer is finally pushing it out the door (as the E3100). To me, this mean's Intel's networking department has no marketing of note, or they just don't care about consumer level hardware, anymore (with two? Three? Attempts to buy out HPC and corporate networking firms), leaving Killer to act as the marketing arm of Intel Networking. Oh, well. At least Killer's stuff never made it onto the Linux side :D

Thanks, I did not realize this. I have an XPS 15 9560 and over the 2 years that I've had this machine so far, the Killer Wireless card has been by far the most troublesome component. Whenever Windows would do a major system update, it would slow down to pitiful speeds until I manually downloaded and installed the latest driver. Even with that, it would constantly drop the connection and force me to reset the adapter to reconnect. I've lost count of the tricks and hacks that I tried to absolutely no avail whatsoever. Eventually, I gave up and just bought some Intel card and the screwdriver needed to open the laptop -- thus far, it works much better.

There aren't many things that I consider dealbreakers, but a soldered Killer WiFi card is probably one of them...

aside from those photos that we caught a glimpse of, any word on a street date? Im REALLY in the need of a new laptop. Ive had the 9560, and it was the best laptop ive owned. I am excited about the next version assuming they utilize the upgraded form factors of the 13 as suggested. its just hard for me to wait to pull the trigger and wait much longer.

if you want an awesome 15 inch dell and don’t mind 16:9 get a xps 15 2in 1. It will provide years of service and you will have probably the best 15 ultra book made.

17" is way too big for me... but I might pull the trigger on the XPS 13. I wonder how long that battery will last and what will it cost? I'm gonna wait for some reviews first. I still like my six year old XPS 13.

Also on the Intel 10th Gen Core i7 CPU.... C'mon it is high time by now for a i8 dontcha think?

I used to think the same until I started using my 7720 again. Big screens are awesome. I would likely get a surface go for when I'm on aircraft and have the 17 xps when I'm on location.

Do like I do, have the best of both worlds, big screen at home and smaller, lighter laptop screen for the road... I run my XPS 13 through my Samsung 42" HDTV and it looks awesome!!!

Another plus doing it this way is I turn off my XPS screen when running it through the 42" screen and I use a wireless keyboard... this saves wear and tear on the XPS laptop. Been doing this for years.

Edited: I sometimes run it through the living room Samsung 80" 4K HDTV and that is something to see, but my wife don't like me doing that when she is home. LOL

I do. I have a 24" dell touchscreen at my desk. But alot of the time I am on the road editing photos and videos therefore the bigger screen is mightly helpful. I only have so much room in the Jeep for equipment, so taking large monitors etc is out. but I could fit a slim 17" notebook no problem with my camera gear.

I'm kinda the opposite... I am a wildlife/nature/landscape photographer and WA state forest service is one of my customers. I have no room in my backpack for a large lappy as I have two camera bodies, three lenses, (one large one 200-500mm) a flash and other gear, so weight and space is a premium. Where I go a lot of times for pics is far enough away I don't want to come home and find out on the bigger screen, "Whoops!" I had a wrong setting on my camera. Camera 2.5" screen isn't big enough to pixel peep. Hence the laptop. This was one of the best days I ever had ten years ago, got black bears too, I was using a samsung ultra laptop then.

I'm really hoping that they fix the speaker and mic array on the refresh. My 9560 is brutal on conference calls and i have to use a headset.
They finally switched over to top firing speakers which is great, hopefully the integrated mic array also gets an upgrade.
