I posted up my question in the owners thread, but it seems to have gone completely ignored, and searches of the same subject in that thread don't turn up much info at all... so, here we go:

I recently got my XPS 13, and while I really enjoy it, I noticed that it consumes a lot of battery while asleep, and it also stays quite hot. I tried to scour the intenet to find out what is going on, and I came accross information about Rapid Start, which as far as I can see, should be already enabled on my system.

All I know is that when I go to check the options of what my computer will do when the lid is closed/power button is pressed, I only see the option to sleep or hibernate. Most people say that if Rapid Start is enabled, I shouldn't even have a choice of what to choose.

Can anyon tell me why my system didn't come with this activated, and what steps I have to take to ensure my computer is utilizing this feature?

    Thanks in advance.

Just spent an hour on the phone with Dell tech support who was unable to help me. Are you serious????
No one on the forum has an answer, including the numerous Dell reps who lurk here, and the XPS 13 owners thread seems to be obsessed with arguing why a gaming laptop is a better value than this computer...

Just follow the instructions there. Should be fairly easy. I'm not going to re-write the whole thing in simple words for you (Sorry ). The instructions are from page 5 to half-way on page 13.

Sooo..... Does that mean you'll try it? The feeling when you can accomplish something yourself (or almost :p) is always nice. Good luck and post back your efforts!

    (PS: Woohoo! Canada! :D)

The reason is not pre-installed because yours is probably refurbished, dell doesn't make 100% exact same as brand new. The workers just re-install windows and make sure it works, that's all.

So if you want a 100% full functions dell PC, get a brand new one instead.

If I'm you, I won't do this mess by myself.
1 Call dell and blame them, return it .
2 Call dell and blame them, intend to return it but the rep will give you credit, then ask a technician comes to your house and fix it

I'll try it today. Seems pretty straightforward.

Mine was NEW from the outlet, so it should not have that problem... but

when I got it there was a little bit of a cosmetic blemish which dell credited me $45 for. If I can't get this to work, I'll just call technical support, show them the document, and have them install this remotely.

    DUDE! The instructions worked.

Word of warning for anyone else who need to do this to their own computer: The instructions say that you can have the partition set to be the same size as the amount of ram you have, which is in the case of the XPS 13 4 GBs. Because of this I initially set a partition with 4096 mbs, but that still caused a driver installation error.

THE PARTITION MUST BE SET AT 8192 MBS!!!

I guess that is the setting these computers are typically shipped with, so it must match that.

Anyway, I ended up learning how to delete hibernate partitions and I'm pretty proficient in diskpart now which is sweet.

It looks like it's working because BIOS shows it has been enabled (it was grey efore), the only problem is that the management utility is not showing up on my desktop.... I guess I just have to go into bios to fiddle with the settings. Oh well, good enough!

Hey, that's great that you did it! :D

That's weird you had to set it to 8GB, the XPS 13 only comes with 4GB of RAM max (the RAM is soldered on).

Also... Have you checked for the management utility in All Programs? And... you did install it, right? (lol just checking)

EDIT: Found the download for the driver/utility: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...productCode=xps-13-l321x&urlProductCode=False

    Hi eggy,

The Intel Rapid Start Technology allows users to quickly resume and load the operating system when the computer is in hibernate mode. When the Rapid Start feature is enabled, the computer saves a snapshot of the current applications in the flash memory before the computer enters the hibernate mode. This allows the computer to resume and load the operating system within few seconds.

The Intel Rapid Start Technology will be available in the system setup only if the system has an SSD installed with at least an 8 GB partition exclusively for this technology from the factory.

Intel Rapid Start Technology can be enabled from BIOS setup. (start the system - hit F2 key on the Dell logo to enter BIOS setup - Advanced tab)

Kindly reply if the above given information is helpful.

    Thanks & Regards

I'm curious, why the refurbished XPS 13 doesn't pre-load this feature?
I helped my friend order a refurbished xps 13, I figured out it doesn't have it. You have to do it by yourself.
Hence, I called dell and ask for return, the rep offer exchange though, since my friend really likes the design of xps 13, I agree for exchange.

What I understand is, the workers who work for dell outlet department don't even know WTH intel rapid start is, so they never pre load it into every xps 13 after they delete all previous data .

I am looking forward the exchange will have similar problem, well....

Hi... Why does the partition have to be double then that of the RAM installed in all XPS 13's? They only come with a maximum of 4GB of RAM....

    Hi,

The 8GB partition to install Intel Rapid Start technology is required from the internal SSD hard drive and it has nothing to do with the 4GB memory. You are right about the Intel Rapid Start not being installed at the Factory on refurbished systems only. However you can manually install Intel Rapid Start after a clean installation of windows 7.

If you wish to do this partition manually, please back up the data and perform these steps:

    1. In Windows click start and right click “computer”, click on “Manage” then click “Disk Manager”.
    2. In Disk Manager find a partition that is installed on the SSD, right click it and click “Shrink Volume”
    3. Choose 8 gigs for the size of the partition.
Then open a command prompt, click start, search and type in command. Select the command prompt. Type the following commands.
    a) Diskpart <enter>
    b) Select disk 0 ( select disk 0 means select the first disk, select disk 1 will be the second disk, you need to select the SSD disk)
    c) Create partition primary size=8192 id=84
Return to Disk Manager and verify that the SSD partition is still listed and is the correct size. Install the IRST file and see if it now works.
